How Your Social Media Is Sabotaging Your Marketing

Someone needs to slap the majority of "new age social media people" across the back of the head.
Social media is about being social. It's not about regurgitating your lousy elevator pitch all over my newsfeed.
I just finished an entirely non-scientific study that ended with a bottle of wine being consumed...and a huge headache - NOT from the wine. Why?
Of the last 250 people that followed me on Twitter, I immediately upon following them back received 174 direct messages from people with why I need to buy their product.
I've received 34 pieces of mail on LinkedIn this week alone telling me why I need to use the services offered by the senders.
And don't even get me started on Facebook.
The Gag Reflex
First of all, you need to understand your audience on social media. The demographic following you - are they following you because that's who is most likely to engage in business with you...or because that's the demographic you've been targeting? It's a little bit of a chicken and the egg thing. Here's how we'll clear that up:
1) Who is the demographic you are trying to serve?
2) Who is the demographic following you on social?
3) What is it going to take to either shift the demographic to who you want to serve....or serve the demographic already following you?
If you aren't marketing to the proper demographic - you're going to get the gag reflex and your audience will reject you. And it WILL get ugly.
Why Your Social Media is Failing
Your followers aren't there to download your white paper. They aren't there to buy your product. They are there to engage with you. It's your job to be a story teller and to add value to their lives. So how are you doing it?
Here are your key questions:
1) When I look through my outreach on social media...does my messaging serve ME or MY CUSTOMERS?
2) What has been my level of engagement from customers and how can I do better by adding more value for them?
3) Does my social media presence feel like a business selling products or an individual building a relationship?
Social Media's Not That Difficult
Every business owner wants to know the secret to success with social media. Ready? Here it is.
Engage with your followers in a way that adds value to THEM.
That's it. That's the magic.
Disagree with me? That's fine. Feel free to vomit it in the comments below. Or tell us about your successes with social.

10 年I agree, The opportunists are the latest additions to social media. They are self-centered and never deliver what they promised. This I see every day. '' Well, Did you read the Fine print.'' ''Engage with your followers in a way that adds value to THEM'' not you. Kind regards, Albert Bellamy Belloni

10 年Engaging with people is more important. If I know you well and trust you i might as well trust your work/product/services. Company builds trust later, first people need to build trust. Plus every business is Based on "Trust".. If you think as a consumer u'll think "I have to put in my hard earned money there, if there r doubts why shud I engage in one." ... so as entrepreneur we must concentrate upon building trust and somehow it comes simultaneously with good social interaction, good work/services, good conduct/mannerism with clients, and Good results that people see. every body has an Image, an entrepreneur must not Risk his/her image in the market. again a great post Kyle Reyes :)
Thank you. When I read your opening line "Someone needs to slap the majority of "new age social media people" across the back of the head", I just started smiling. It's so true.

10 年"Engage with your followers in a way that adds value to THEM." Everything is said only by this phrase. Kyle Reyes you have a unique talent to take things from around that to most of us are insignificant and turn them in to great articles. This is a talent. You actually engage your followers by giving value to them. You do not force them to follow you, they follow you in order to read what you write. For example me, I am so curious everyday to see out of what incident you will make a subject and you will provide me with an amazing article like this. Thanks!

10 年Kyle, this was a great article. (We've met through Mr. Rivera- at your offices) What is funny is that "somehow" this year, I fell into doing a little bit of this work for a current client of mine, and the client's social media engagement has been really great. But now- I find I need to do the same for my OWN business and pick up the pace. You've given me some points to re-reflect on and make some adjustments. Appreciated!
