Why Early Literacy is My Charitable Focus

Why Early Literacy is My Charitable Focus

In 2000, I was introduce to SMART (Start Making a Reader Today) by a coworker. Having already volunteered as a mentor and Big Brother, I was intrigued by the hour-a-week commitment and the potential impact it could make. Did you know that prison capacity nationwide is based, in part, on 3rd grade reading levels? I was sold by the idea of changing that number by helping struggling readers find a love for reading and harnessing the power of literacy to becmce a valued member of society.

A few years into my volunteer reading experience (I'm still a reader today), I decided it would be fun to leverage my organization, Anvil, to raise awareness and funds for SMART. SMART Gala was born in 2004 and the 2014 Gala raised over $450,000. I was eventually asked to join the board and am not on the executive committee for the organization. The organization has navigated rough waters over the years, but continues to make an impact for Oregon children and their families.

Most recently, SMART was recognized by the Library of Congress with the 2014 Literacy Award. I continue to be an advocate for SMART, literacy and investing in our children. As the immortal Whitney Houston once said, "I believe that children are our future. Treat them well and let them lead the way." Amen Whitney.
