Should Cafes Ban Laptop Use?
Is the home office now being taken to the cafe and coffee shop?
I am guilty to a point, but especially when travelling on holidays either locally or overseas. I usually want to check and update my social platforms while having a relaxing coffee, but really is it necessary? Where will conversation take us?.
It is really interesting that my husband although very sympathetic to my needs of being near "WiFi" cafes, would take a magazine along with him . We enjoy each others company while I check online, or maybe write a few lines of a blog post while he read. We would then quite often have a conversation about either what it was he was reading or I would ask his opinion on a certain comment to post.
I find those people spending quite a few hours ( and some nearly all day) in a cafe writing and sipping on one cup of coffee using that space as a "virtual" office disrespectful. I am for the cafes putting up there signs that say "no Laptop area".. "reserved for non online activity" "laptop use limited for 30 minutes only".
We should not be stopping other paying customers coming in and not being able to find a table.
Is that "blogger" or home office guru used up all their data for the month, or does not have an office at home or is too stingy to rent an office?
I would be interested to know your thoughts! Am I being too harsh?________________________________________________________________

10 年It really depends on the situation Merril. I used to spend every Tuesday morning after I dropped the kids off to school at a local cafe for breakfast to schedule my week's social media and blog. The owner knew why I was there and encouraged it, in return I shared my "office" over social media. Win/win. I think that if you are arrogantly using the same "ideal window seat" day in / day out it would be up to management to approach you and tell you to "move on".

10 年I spend quite a bit of time every week in Wifi Cafes! That is my Business model and always meet my clients at their local Cafe. At least once a day at pre-lunch, for lunch or at afternoon tea you will find me with my Client/s at a cafe on Cronulla or Bondi Beach or opposite a park or even in the Royal National Park. We never spend more than an hour there and we get very creative being inspired by the different views. I always look for and find different cafes around Sydney and looking forward to the Day that I open up Business in a Cafe near You. I always had a dream to work out of cafes from a very young age..It was my Grandfather's influence. He would 'baby sit' me & take me along to the Greek kafenio while my parents were working. So I haven't worked out if I made my Business around the Cafe environment, because the Cafe lifestyle was what I was looking for...Or if the Business I am in works better out of a Cafe Maybe I should Franchise it!

10 年I'm so guilty of this! But I always purchase something. When I sit in a coffee shop longer (+ 1,5 hour) I will also purchase more. To me it's like paying for Wifi somewhere, but coffee shops are a lot cozier and it always looks good with more customers sitting there!
