"On November 10, 1775, a Corps of Marines was created by a resolution of the Continental Congress. Since that date many thousand men have borne the name Marine. In memory of them it is fitting that we who are marines should commemorate the birthday of our corps by calling to mind the glories of its long and illustrious history."
The 13th commandant, General John A. Lejeune commissioned this directive, that goes on to describe how "Marines have won foremost honors in war, and in the long eras of tranquility at home generation after generation of Marines have grown gray in war in both hemispheres, and in every corner of the seven seas that our country and its citizens might enjoy peace and security."
And, while civilians look upon Marines wishing each other a happy birthday with a tilt of the head wondering how so many people share the same birthday, it is second nature for those who've earned the eagle, globe and anchor. Yes, there's a bit of arrogance in the way Marines boast; and, there's definitely a sense of pride emanating from their chests as they strut in their dress blue uniforms. But, it's also so well deserved that anyone with a hint of knowledge of the USMC's lore, the mettle tested on the battlefield; and its service to country; also understands that these people are different. They draw strength from one another. They 'feed' off each other and seem to become exponentially stronger. But, not the kind of strength that a bully uses on the playground; rather, it's the kind of strength and courage that stands up to them.
"No better friend; no worse enemy" has been a phrase Marines have lived up to in every battle fought, no matter the geography, no matter the ethnicity. In the second chapter of Romans, the Apostle Paul teaches that even those who were not taught the law will know the law, for it has been sealed onto their hearts by their heavenly Father. Marines know this law - it is the law of honor and honoring our heritage through acts of courage; acts of heroism; and acts of kindness and mercy. And, this is why there is no better friend; no worse enemy than a Marine.
And since that day in 1921 when Lejeune commissioned this message, the "birthday message" has been read to hundreds of thousands of Marines, family, friends, and guests every year in places such as hotel ballrooms; squad bays; and battlefields around the world. In recognition of its storied past as a reminder that we who are privileged to wear the uniform also carry the burden of upholding this "high name of distinction and soldierly repute" for Marines both in and out of uniform; at home or on the battlefield; or here on earth or guarding the streets of heaven, we should never forget that it is we, who are honored and privileged to be a United States Marine.
Happy birthday to all Marines, and Semper Fidelis.

10 年I am the proud father of a son who is United States Marine who has served in Afghanistan and preparing to deploy to Middle East again early next year! His desire is to serve his country as he follows in the footsteps of his older half-brother, his brother-in-law, and his grandfather, who was one of the most highly decorated soldiers of WWII. With men with his dedication to God and country serving, the Marine Corp will continue to kick butt and its 239 years of "badassery"! GO MARINES!!
