Let It Go: Why 'Frozen' Characters Will Trick or Treat at Your House This Halloween

Let It Go: Why 'Frozen' Characters Will Trick or Treat at Your House This Halloween

Heads up: If you are planning on dressing as Elsa or Olaf at your Halloween party this weekend, you probably won't win Best Costume.

That’s because almost 20% of all paid search spend in August and September by marketers on Halloween costumes went to Frozen character keywords, according to a recent report from AdGooroo, as published in MarketingProfs.

The Frozen character Elsa garnered the most spending–$385,000 of the total $2.9 million spent–which probably means there will be a lot of Elsas showing up trick-or-treating at your door tonight and at Halloween parties this weekend. (The anticipated prevalence has also spawned an Internet meme/drinking game.)

About $720,000 went to keywords for Disney-themed costumes (like Disney Princess, Mickey Mouse, and so on), and $168,000 went to keywords related to the Disney-owned brands of Marvel (like Spider-Man, Captain America) and Star Wars (Yoda, Darth Vader).

The report looked at spend data from 1,128 Halloween costume keywords for Text Ads and Product Listing Ads on Google in the United States from August to September 2014.

Wanna be unique?

Dress as1990s British TV character Mr. Blobby, John Adams, Spider-Man villain Dr. Octopus, or Xena Warrior Princess; paid keyword spend for those costumes were the lowest.

Or you could always opt to old school. Which is why more creepy and terrifying than anything Halloween 2014 might have in store.

Oh how times have changed. When I was a kid it was wire hangers, dad's coat, blankets, maybe a store bought mask. But generally the rule was, spend no money on a costume. One little boy got extra candy on Friday night, because he MADE his costume. And yes, we saw a few Elsa's and Marvel comics characters too. It's still all fun.

Well the night hit most of those top costumes. I saw a lot of 1, 5, 7, 9 and 10. And many more that didn't get mentioned, Harry Potter(yes, he is still alive...almost as many as Frozen!). But don't forget the infamous, bumble bees and lady bugs. However, the best of all was a 20 month old portraying the old man from the movie Up. Complete with his minature walker, glasses, balloons and a sucker in his mouth accompanied by two beautiful hippies(age 8,5!). Thanks for keeping Halloween real for us.

Ann, this post shares the creative content marketing perspective and reason why every serious marketer #mustread #everybodywrites! I see these important Everybody Writes Rules in your post: 18) Show, Don't Tell; 19) Use Familiar Yet Surprising Analogies; 20) Approach Writing Like Teaching; 21) Keep It Simple -- but Not Simplistic; 25) Be Rabid about Readability; 44) Look to Analogy instead of Example; 47) See Content Moments Everywhere; 55) Cite as You Write; 59) Ground Content in Data.
