I am a believer in the power of positive thinking. I am also a believer in the power of positive MOMENTUM.
Sometimes we become 'stuck' and we just need a little positive momentum to get things rolling again.
Take the sales process for example:
After a couple weeks of prospects not wanting to see you, rejecting your products, and saying no more than yes, you lose your motivation. You start to see everything though a slightly negative lens and find it hard to get up in the morning. You decide to visit an existing, satisfied customer as a way to make yourself feel better. That customer is willing to refer you to her colleague. You set up a meeting and end up showing the colleague something that intrigues him. You say 'Is there anyone else you recommend I show this to?' and he refers you to two more people. So you go and see them. Then you go home and follow-up on the conversations you had and write down some action items to keeping the conversation going. You have built positive momentum towards a sale.
Now let's take another example. Let's say you want to learn French but you are having trouble knowing where to start. You look online and see that there is a group of people in your area that get together regularly to practice speaking French. You think to yourself that your speaking ability is not advanced enough to join the group, however you decide to go anyway. As you are speaking a combination of very bad French and English, one of the group members tells you (in English) that there are free French classes and writes down a website. You go home and check out the website and decide to enroll in a class. You continue taking the class until your French is advanced enough to join the group again and the momentum continues from there. You are on your way to becoming a French speaker.
Now let's take one last example. Let's say you have always wanted to live in by the ocean but you don't know anything about Vancouver (let's say) or anyone who lives there. You go on Facebook and proclaim that you ‘need to make a friend in Vancouver’. 5 people are intrigued and respond offering to connect you with their friend. The friend not only answers your questions about the city, but tells you to come visit sometime so they can show you around. You are not planning to go to Vancouver any time soon but you add them as a friend to Facebook and keep in touch. When the opportunity arises, you travel to Vancouver and get a personal tour. You now have some positive momentum to look for jobs and housing in that region.
Sometimes we don't know where to start in life. All the positive THINKING in the world does not always yield positive results. You can't just ask 'The Universe' for something and then go back to what you have always been doing. You need to take an action. Whether it is following up on a sales lead, or a recommendation for a language class, or an invitation to visit a different city, sometimes you just need to act and then keep the MOMENTUM going.
This is easier said than done …keep a positive attitude and always take someone up on an opportunity. You never know where it might lead.
