Government backflip on election promise
The Government recently decided to dump the plans for a much needed upgrade to the car park at Paradise Interchange. This was an election promise made at last year’s State election, which I believe should be honoured.
The Paradise community has over many years endured the overflow parking, spilling into their quiet residential streets, causing choking blockages to property access and creating dangerous conditions for both pedestrians and motorists. I receive many calls for us, (Council), to send parking inspectors out to the streets of Paradise to try to ease the problems my constituents face regarding all day parkers by those who use the Interchange. This is such an ongoing problem for Paradise residents that issuing some parking tickets to provide a temporary relief is an inadequate solution to this massive problem.
For the park and ride commuters the existing car park is totally inadequate for its purpose, creating personal safety concerns, leaving people with no option but to either park all day in the local streets (despite the two hour limit), or in areas a very long distance away without proper facilities, security, lighting or a pedestrian crossing. To complete the long walk from the Church Community land, crossing Darley Road to get to the Interchange, (especially in peak hour), is a dangerous exercise for the able bodied fit person, let alone if you’re aged, in a wheelchair, have mobility issues, are sight impaired or are a mother with children in tow.
I would appreciate your support for this motion by circulating the petition below in your communities or work places. If you have received a copy of the petition already , I hope that you have been able to collect some signatures.
You don’t have to be a commuter or even a resident living in the “war zone” around the Interchange to sign. This is a rally for what is right and an opportunity to support your fellow members of the community.
Paradise Interchange Car Parking Petition
We the undersigned join with River Ward Councillor, Marijka Ryan, in strongly urging the Government to keep their election promise to build an appropriate car park at the Paradise Interchange.
The Paradise community has over many years endured the overflow parking, spilling into their quiet residential streets, causing choking blockages to property access and creating dangerous conditions for both pedestrians and motorists.
For the park and ride commuters the existing car park is totally inadequate for its purpose, creating personal safety concerns, leaving people with no option but to either park illegally in the local streets or in areas a long distance away without proper security and lighting.
If you live in the Adelaide metropolitan area I would be happy to email the actual petition to you. Please request the petition at [email protected]
N.B. Please return completed petition/s to Council Offices by no later than 5pm, next Tuesday, 4 November. I will be tabling the petition in support of my motion in Council on the night.
