Believe It or Not, Wall Street Is Helping You

"We The Economy," a series of short films designed to explain the basics of how our economy works, debuts this week. It's important stuff and a film I'm proud to have been a part of.

Let's face it: there's a real divide in our country between what's perceived as "Main Street" and what's perceived as "Wall Street." The film chips away at these preconceived notions and explains how we're all in this together.

To run a business, you need capital. Money. How do you get that money? You guessed it -- Wall Street.

The reality is: Wall Street and Main Street cannot exist without the other. Wall Street is the engine powering economic growth; it's the industry that enables people to invest in other peoples' businesses - which, in turn, helps provide the country with jobs and money and the ability to grow.

Yes. I know. The markets aren't perfect. 2008 is the most recent reminder of that. While markets have performed in a reliable way throughout most of history, there is always the danger of an asset bubble. Ideally, investors allocate their money to an investment (whether that be an ultra-safe treasury bond or a riskier tech growth-stock) based on what they believe the future may hold. Sometimes, there are just too many people willing to take on too much risk, forgetting the consequences. Hence, a bubble.

Nonetheless, there is no better way to invest than in our capital markets - and the market recovery from the depths of 2008 has taught us that. After all, we can't stuff our money under our mattresses, cross our fingers and hope for the best. We need to put it somewhere, and Wall Street is the mechanism for doing exactly that.

We are a country of risk takers and entrepreneurs. We believe in the future and innovation - but, without the ability to allocate capital, we cannot realize our potential. At the end of the day, while the country has its challenges, the U.S. is still home to the most reliable, robust and liquid financial markets in the world.

Is Wall Street even needed in order to buy, sell and trade between, the source of a good, or service, and the direct consumer. And; why is Scotland Yard in London, England?
