It's no secret. Headhunters head hunt. They call companies directly to find exactly what their clients are looking for. I am personally referred to as a sniper, as I am not looking for just anyone, I am out there to find specific minds for my clients, hence my company name--MindHR. So if you aren't a client, you better believe I am tapping into your company. but don't blame me because "your" staff is leaving.
As a true headhunter I know what is going on in the marketplace. I am speaking to everyone from the executive staff to the assistants so if there is a department that is unhappy or there is change about to happen in your company, you better believe we know about it and we will pull your good people out like we are plucking chickens.
There is a plus side though, as there are people we who won't make a change and here's why:
1) They Feel Stability- Your company is not just stable but growing at a comfortable rate. They feel your product is moving, a leader in the industry, innovative but not too innovative, interesting
2) They Are Paid Well- Money isn't everything but if a company is working only on their name to keep employees, it doesn't work. As headhunters we know who pays low and who doesn't so if you are on the low side, know that your employees may not know, but we do!
3) The Company Is Close To Home- Some people find their personal time is important or they want to get to work early and stay late so being close to home can be a key factor. This is something people who decide to move offices need to think about. If you are located in the center of the city and move further West, a lot of your good people will want to change
4) They Feel Growth- They feel they have a chance to learn, be challenged mentally and become a senior or a leader within the organization. If you have a Director of HR who won't leave until she dies, your HR Manager is going to want to leave if they aren't going to be challenged in other ways.
5) They Aren't Finished A Project- Some people thrive on projects and want to see what they start not just finish but expand. People involved in the project don't want to leave because they want to see their baby grow up...give it 6 months to a year or two if things aren't created equal they will want to leave.
6) They Love Their Team- There's nothing like comradery-going to work each day knowing you may not love what you do but you love the people. If your company or divisions within the company are participating in events, going out, celebrating the next party with like minded people, they are happy.
7) The Are Respected- There is nothing worse, however then working in an environment where everyone is yelling or one person is being berated in front of others, it's uncomfortable for everyone and may land you in a lawsuit so be careful how you talk to others...it can bite you in the ass..literally!
8) They Genuinely LOVE You- Some people stay at a company because they feel they are completely loyal to their boss. You were there when a family member, died or was sick, you helped pay for their schooling, you went to a funeral, a birth or a wedding, you became part of their family as they became part of yours. These people you genuinely care about care about you and don't want to leave you hanging. Not now, not ever.
9) They Feel Valued-You compliment their work. You say "good job" "well done" and they know their work adds value to you and the company. Everyone deep down wants people to like them in one way or another. Just saying two words, makes that happen.
10) They Feel Empowered And Independent But Still Guided- Doesn't matter what level you are at people do not want to be micromanaged. They want to know they have a place to turn when they need help but they don't want anyone breathing down their neck, not now, not ever. They also want to know what they have to say has value to you and won't be brushed off.
If you are able to do all 10 things you will be able to keep your employees, that I can tell you. It will not matter how many times a headhunter calls them however if you can't, you might be better off taking the opportunity to speak with the headhunter to see how they can stop poaching your people and start working with you.
Should be so obvious but is still surprising for some...

10 年Excellent article by Jessica. We don't cause the problems within an organization. We just know which one's aren't taking care of their employees like our client companies will. Blaming the recruiter is like blaming the tree you ran into because you were texting and driving.

10 年I have always maintained that recruiters do not "steal" anyone. We simply deliver the opportunity in person. If the current firm is NOT doing the 10 things in the article, then my reception may be positive. simple as that.
Couldn't agree more!
