Bring In Your Parents Day

This is Holly, taking over Dad's blog for a few hours as part of the launch of Bring In Your Parents Day... taking place this year on November 6th.

When the team at LinkedIn asked if I would support Bring In Your Parents Day, I jumped at the chance. I know it might sound strange, with both Dad and I working within Virgin, but with Dad based on Necker Island and me in London, I thought it was a great way to show him exactly what I get up to each day.

A great deal of my character and spirit has stemmed from my childhood, and the influence of my wonderful parents. No matter where I was or what I was doing, they always had time to give, a loving ear to lend, and great advice - that’s kind of what Bring In Your Parents Day is about. It’s that sharing of knowledge, bridging the gap between our separate worlds as adults, and appreciating what each other has to give.

For example, it might seem crazy to suggest that your mum or dad might know the first thing about social media (I’m aware my Dad is a bit of an anomaly with his social-savviness), but there will be a lot they do have to offer your work, perhaps just in different ways. The same goes for your parents; I guarantee they would love to have some kind of insight into your world and find out more about what keeps you occupied for so many hours of the day.

As I said before, Dad and I are a bit of a different example, with us both lucky enough to work across all the Virgin companies, but with him being back in the UK for the week, I thought I would invite him along to my meeting at Virgin Galactic’s London office. It was great fun having him there and being able to ask his opinion on things.

One of the most important things Dad ever taught me, was to always treat everyone the same - whether the CEO of a company, the cleaner, or receptionist… everyone has an important role to play.

Bring In Your Parents Day is a reminder that every generation has something different and valuable to share, and that your parents are just as wonderful and knowledgeable as they were when you were growing up.

Will you join me in bringing your parent to work?

intergenerational knowledge is always best absorbed when the learning is applied on specific times and in the present moment. Parents knows best...

This is along the line of thinking I have about why I put my elderly (90 year old) father on my resume. I list a husband and two kids -- but my dad is both in my life and informs so much of my life.

Why is the loneliness of old people a problem in today′s world? Who could forget their own mother and father? Sure there are moments our mothers and fathers can get to our nerves - but just remember how many times it was the other way around. Does not your mothers and fathers love, years of it, make them worthy of your attention? A parents love is something you will miss always once they are gone. Even though your parents may not always know how to show it in a way we would understand. Just remember that behind parents calls, their worry, their suggestions for your life is love, and the wish you would do well in your life. So show respect for your parents love - a parents love for her children never dies. Remember them, call them, visit them, ask them over to visit. One day you will be glad you did.
