How I set up a TV station in only 35 minutes

It’s mid-morning, I’m working on my laptop in the visitor’s lounge at the garage while my car is getting serviced. They have wifi, strong coffee and good comfort.

Then my phone rings. It’s my wife calling.

‘How’s it going?’ she asks

‘All is good. I just launched a TV station on youtube!’

'Hey, but aren’t you supposed to be at the garage?’

‘I am, I’m getting some work done while I’m waiting for the car.’

‘What’s all this about you setting up a TV station?’

'It’s for my new client. We decided that we are going to start a a dedicated online TV channel to build a following…’

Then she says something about wishing I’d just get a real job so I wouldn’t have to be doing all this weird stuff. I’ve heard it before and I know it comes from a caring place. It’s all fine. She’s just trying to be the sensible one but I appreciate how she lets me gallop freely around my little ‘meadow of madness’.

Now, imagine the same phone conversation 10 years ago, back in 2004.

‘…All is good. I just launched a TV station…’

"You did what? Did you just say that you set up a ‘TV station?!’

It’s hard to believe that Youtube was only launched in 2005, isn't it!?. Before that, setting up a TV station was something that only billionaires did!

The fact that I just set up a ‘media outfit’ in a visitors lounge of a garage makes feel high on possibility.

It only took 15 minutes to set up the channel and upload the essential art work. If you add another 20 minutes to configure a Google+ page, you can be in the media business in less than an hour!

Then, thanks to 'Hangouts", Google's idiot-proof online broadcasting tool even allows you to broadcast live with nothing more than a smartphone from anywhere in the world with an internet connection. All it takes is to switch on the camera, hit the record button and you are on the air for the world to see!

I still find this amazing, despite the fact that there are hundreds of millions of youtube channels and over 1 billion people watching more than 6 billion hours of video each month. If you want to see some more sobering statistics, you may enjoy this page by youtube itself

I’d say it’s time to start broadcasting some more!
