With over 500 million people visit a month, Wikipedia is spending $48 million per year, or $4 million per month, which is less than a penny per person per month. For Wikipedia servers, to pay for infrastructure, administration, finance, governance, legal costs to defend against copyright and libel allegations alone is costing $9 million and an added $30,000 just for hosting.
Let’s think of the software which has to work in 300 languages and this feature has to be tested in 27 different browsers, supporting even WAP phones. This needs a team of people to translate to 300 different languages and testing is definitely is a tedious and expensive process when 5 million people are using it.
