The power of JUMP Start in building credibility as a HRBP

Back in March I was pointed in the direction of a book by Michael D Watkins called "The First 90 Days". In this book it discusses the powerful process of New Leader Assimilation, whereby a HRBP invests time with a new leader to build instant credibility and speed up the transition from value demand to value creation. Apparently it takes 12.3 weeks to reach "break even point"!

Anyway, armed with this book I drew up a tool for us to use at work based on the theory. I was a bit sceptical to be honest that something so simple could be of benefit. Since then, I've worked with numerous teams who have been going through transition, such as either having a new external manager, a promoted internal manager, a re-shuffle or just a new set of strategic objectives.

The process is easy;

Spend an hour with the manager, and hour with the team, another hour with the manager, then an hour with the manager and the team. We discuss 8 simple questions to break down barriers, gain clarity, reach agreement and set actions.

I can't believe how quickly this process has gathered pace, from me doing a pilot session in April we are now formatting our whole Leadership Team Transformation communications around the JUMP Start format.

The impact for my customers has been incredible, they now function as much stronger holistic teams and as such are starting to really leverage their own high performance potential. Personally, I've now got very strong relationships with new leadership teams and existing managers who were harder to reach. The credibility of the HR Service continues to grow and demand for facilitated sessions is growing significantly.

All you need to kick this off is an overview of the process, your own 8 questions, time and great facilitation skills! Nothing else - just keep it simple!
