A must see Exhibition at Sydney’s Powerhouse Museum reveals that a woman was the first computer programmer, Countess Ada Lovelace (1815-1852), the daughter of Lord Byron.
Ada was a mathematician and writer chiefly known for her work on Charles Babbage’s early mechanical general-purpose computer, the Analytical Engine. Her notes on the engine include what is recognised as the first algorithm intended to be carried out by a machine. Because of this, she is often described as the world’s first computer programmer.
The exhibition explores how the vision of a handful of astute designers internationally have transformed information technology. The functional and clunky machines from just over a century ago have become sleek and ubercool, must-have accessories that most of us cannot do without today.
Drawing on the Museum’s collection, the exhibition also features products designed and manufactured by Olivetti, Braun and Apple among others and include iconic examples of radios, typewriters, calculators, computers, digital media players, smart phones and tablet computers.
It examines the ideals of the people who started some of the greatest consumer product companies of the 20th century and how these designers and engineers applied their principles to the things they designed. These were designers who thought about how people and machines interact; and how to make complicated technology appealing and easy to use. What they did effectively, was look at what we do, think about what we need and create what we want.
