Just Do It!

There comes a time in an employer's life when they have to fill an open position in their company with a new employee. In some cases, it might be multiple times (for a number of employers). Some of you who are reading this article have been down this road before. Some of you have never been managers/supervisors. How many of you guys still read a newspaper?

The newspaper is filled with all kinds of information. Some information in a newspaper is very important sometimes. The importance pertaining to the sections/categories of a newspaper depends on what the reader who is reading the newspaper thinks is important. This also depends on his or her situation in life during the time of reading that newspaper. I have noticed that for almost sixteen years straight, the media in the United States of America, has talked about the economy being bad. So, my next question is: For fourteen of these years, what was and still is the most important section of every newspaper printed in the United States?

The answer to your question is: the classifieds: employment. My next question is: What kinds of employment is listed in the employment section? The answer is: all kinds of jobs are listed.

There are millions of people in the United States of America who need jobs. Also, there are a lot of hungry individuals out there who need these jobs that are often advertised in newspapers. Further, there is a hunger seen here on Linkedin. A lot of people who are here on this website have this same type of hunger. When I say "hunger", I mean a deep desire. A serious need combined with desire.

I see this hunger all over LinkedIn. Just browse through the responses that are posted in response to various articles on the LinkedIn site itself. There are a lot of professionals here on Linkedin who have degrees. Some of you who have degrees have jobs, too. Yet, that is not enough. Why? There are too many reasons to put down in this article. However, I will put some reasons down.

As far as other reasons behind why some of you browse through LinkedIn, I do not know, because I am not a mind reader. Some of you who are on LinkedIn are here because you want a better job. Some of you want a better job and a nice title to go with it (I.e. CEO/Jr. Executive Officer, etc.), like to read the articles, browse profiles, and much more. Some users on LinkedIn are here to play.

Some of those who play on this site use LinkedIn as their personal playground by creating fake profiles and doing other things unfathomable to the imagination. Next, I have another question. What happens to the lucky applicant after an application is submitted? The applicant is usually notified via phone and/or email to come in for an interview. Not all interviews guarantee that a person is hired.

Nowadays, applications go through a "screening process" once submitted via computer/internet. This very next question is directed towards every individual who is responsible for hiring new employees: How long does it take you to decide when to hire someone?

Does it usually take you a few hours? Does it take one day? Does it take two days? Does it take four days? Does it take you a full week to hire someone or more than one person? If it takes you (as an employer) more than five days to hire people, what is the reason? Surely you have a legitimate excuse. As a professional, no matter how many employees that you need to replace, it should take you no more than seven days to fill a position. If you have taken up to two weeks or more to hire a new employee/employees, hopefully you are hiring 1,000 or more qualified applicants.

I don't care what excuse you make. Unless you have a family emergency, two weeks or more is too long for someone to wait on a job. And, it is negligent on your part as an employer, to take so long to fill the required and sought after position (especially if your company has business hours around the clock! ). There are too many things that can happen when your company is operating without the appropriate number of employees. Performing an act such as this as an employer not only can make you look bad, you will have contributed to being an active participant by playing a role in the lagging economy (definition: " lagging-to fail to maintain a desired pace or to keep up; fall or stay behind"-https://dictionary.reference.com/browse/lagging/).

If you are this type of employer, why do you sit on your "laurels" for extended periods of time before hiring the next employee? Do you have some type of personal problem(s) going on? If you do, here are some tips to "get er' done" (fill the employee position (s) expeditiously):

A) If you are overwhelmed, get some help from another employee of your company who is also qualified to hire individuals.

B) If you are the only person of authority who is qualified to hire individuals, hire an assistant. You can give them the title called assistant manager.

C) If you are a small "mom and pop" business (very small company with less than 25-50 employees), hire an assistant or make your spouse/family member a hiring manager, also.

D) Make an on-call list of hiring managers who are reliable and flexible to fill in for you, when you cannot. Emergencies arise.

There are many ways to "skin a cat", meaning that there are numerous ways to do this. I just listed a few of them. Now, get to hiring, you fool! Just do it!

I agree with your advice and also believe in a trial period for employees. I believe that you must have great decision making skills and know what you want yet maintain flexibility to be successful at this and in life.

I am very eager to hire and make an offer, as soon as I find someone I think will be great. I suppose I could save a few days or even weeks by settling for less, but having great employees is too important to cut corners.
