Working Autonomously

Here at HubSpot most of our HR policies consist of just 3 words. I am aware that statement will attract scepticism but it is in fact true. “Use good judgement”, we don’t just say it but we mean it too.

Employees at HubSpot are intelligent, highly competent and skilled professionals and are entrusted to behave as such and use their own good judgement to decide upon their working hours, breaks, working locations, and a lot of the major facets of their job. People are entrusted to take their work load and plan to conquer it according to what suits them best and how they best like to work. We have people that come in late, others that go home early, some people that work from home one day a week and various other combinations that allow HubSpotters to integrate their working life with their home life as easily as possible.

The other benefit of autonomy is that you report to your manager on metrics and results, but not on what you are doing multiple times per day. Our sales management team are a busy bunch, and are not interested in the minute details of our reps working days or listening to their calls. Similarly, if a rep is reaching his/her targets every month, they are out of the spotlight and their manager might only check in once per week to ensure they aren't having any issues. The way people work is changing and the days of a punch in card are thankfully over at least in the tech sector. The current generation of employees work hard because they want to rather than because middle management are breathing down their neck.

Trust is a cornerstone of any autonomous culture and as such we hire the best and brightest talent on the market, those whom we know will thrive in this environment and still work hard every day despite not being micromanaged.

To find out more you can join the 1.5 million people that have already taken a look at The HubSpot Culture Code Slide Share or read why our founder and CEO Brian Halligan thinks naps during the working day are a good idea here. For any sceptics here is quick peek at the purpose build nap room in our Boston office!

Well written Louise Walsh! We can enable and trust our colleagues (until they disappoint us) or we can start this relationship with mistrust from day one. I have positive experiences with your approach.
