Have you exported your contacts out of LinkedIn? You should.

There are still plenty of LinkedIn users who do not know one of it's greatest features, which is to export all of your contacts out to a file containing their contact information!

Why would you want to do this, you may ask, to which I would answer for many reasons including backing up your contacts (LinkedIn may not be here forever) and then you can add your contacts to your email client like Outlook or even your contacts database.

When you export your contacts out of LinkedIn you do not get huge amounts of information but you do get all of the important contact fields including:

  • First name
  • Last name
  • Business name
  • Email address

So if you want to export your LinkedIn contacts follow these simple steps:

1. Once logged in to LinkedIn from the home page click the 'Connections' menu item. Once on the connections screen you will see a wheel/cog icon on the top right as marked below, click this:

2. From this settings screen (below) you can see an option to export your LinkedIn Connections on the right. Select it

3. There are a few options on the final screen but I would using the default format which will export a CSV file that can be opened in many programs including Excel and used for importing into many other programs as well. Click 'Export' and file safely.

Well worth doing this periodically to ensure you have a record of all new connections as well.

Yeah, Phil, if LinkedIn decided to change their terms of service, or just throw in the towel, then you could lose all those contacts (and relationships) literally overnight. I believe this is called digital sharecropping. Thanks for the tip – just exported my own contacts.

Such a useful article - important to note the importance of not spamming though as way to lose connections!
