Defining Social Media: Connection vs. Content networks
Back in April 2014 I have written the first article on Content vs. Connection networks on my blog, and this definition seems to be very broadly accepted with the marketing community.
A couple observations that I would have from recent market movement:
- The gravities (see below in second picture) are really going towards the middle
- Traditional media are trying to create more social layers and getting to be more social
- There is a more fragmented strategy in the "content networks"
e.g. Facebook with Paper, Slinsghot, Instagram, Linkedin with Pulse, Twitter with Vine, and we will see more than that - Content networks seem to be where the majority of the growth is
- With the use-cases, the phones getting more powerful, and the users getting more sophisticated, people can easily switch from network to network
