5 Reasons why you SHOULD start your own business

In the last couple of weeks I've seen a few LinkedIn articles/posts encouraging people to avoid the so-called adventure of starting their own business. Authors have warned readers of the difficulties involved, the low chances of success, the high risks, and their poor ability to fulfill dreams. Some authors have recommended readers to keep their jobs and avoid risk, and one even went the 'extra mile' by recommending a focus on acquiring existing small businesses instead, completely ignoring the fact that such businesses wouldn't even exist had their owners accepted his mantra....
As a serial entrepreneur, I find such calls very odd, if not diminishing to say the least. Our personal growth, human nature and the global economy all depend on our ability to innovate, push the envelope, think out-of-the-box and create new, innovative activities and products. Suppressing such basic human characteristics equals putting the future of our race and economy on hold.
Here are 5 reasons why you SHOULD open your own business and replace your current comfort zone with a brighter and definitely much more interesting future:
1. Realize your potential; take that leap, make it happen. Follow your dreams and execute the product or venture you envision. Should you follow the basic rules of business and stick to your principles, you'll realize your business potential.
2. Take control over your life; manage your own domain and make decisions that benefit your business and yourself. Shed past dependencies on other decision makers or bosses. Take yourself and your business to wherever makes you happy, successful and fulfilled.
3. Current business climate supports early stage investments; no matter what you've been told, the current climate encourages innovation and embraces new concepts. Investors will be willing to back you up if you bring a unique, well thought through, and game-changing concepts.
4. Own your own revenue streams; as tough as it may sometimes be to manage and grow your own business, one of the more important benefits is the control you'll have over your own revenue streams and your ability to decide how to channel such income to the benefit of the business and yourself. Depend on and trust yourself and not on your bosses' decisions.
5. Build a brighter future; for yourself, based on your desires and your visions. And for everyone by introducing successful and innovative businesses.
To be honest, opening a new business may not suit everyone. Much attention and thought should be given prior to embarking on this path, (also refer to my prior posts: "10 essential considerations for the budding startup" and "Fundraising honeymoon"). I'll address this point in my next post dealing with some situations where opening a new business may not be the best route.

10 年Great post, Guy I am trying to approach this topic with the 40+ population with "Be Dare - ???? ????" apparently we can see 3 more reasons to open your own business ; (a) in the age above 40 we see that 50% are unemployed in any given time. as the age raise the probability to return back to the employment cycle reduce dramatically and unfortunately it’s across the board (b) Discussing lately with employees, we see that the middle class suffer in the recent years from erosion at their standard of living - more and more are looking for alternatives to compensate this gap and they are looking for a "side" business in parallel to their "safe" job (c) Apparently there is no "safe" job any more, something that was true 20 years ago - everyone at least for the second career should consider to open its own business
Good article, Guy, but in my humble opinion the most fulfilling business is one that really helps other people - and I'm not talking about selling service numbers with lower prices than the cheapest competitor!
