What Sets Winning Companies Apart?
In this fast-moving and global economy, how can you spot the winners and losers in the business world? I have learned to not just look at the numbers, but to peek behind the scenes because a winning company is often the result of a winning culture.
What does a winning culture look like?
- Make culture a focus from the start. Too often new companies focus on growth and assume culture is something that will develop organically.
- Put your company’s cultural attributes are in writing. It sounds simple, but writing down the things you believe in helps to strengthen and teach your culture to employees every day. At Rakuten, our business principles are framed on the wall of every conference room.
- Make culture a topic of everyday conversation. At Rakuten, this is a core element of our existence we experience every day. A company that visits its culture once in while may stumble, while a company that lives its culture every day is guided and less likely to make a misstep.
Culture is often described as a “soft” element of corporate life – not given as much attention as technical or financial prowess. But I believe a strong culture may tip the scales of success. It is culture that creates the environment in which people do their best work. It is that best work that creates a winner.

10 年Absolutely agreed! I had experiences working in both small team of startups and large corporates. I found that most small company are focusing on more teamwork and having more open communication and well-defined and established company culture for individual. Working and collaboration in teams are more encouraged and motivated by the management and founders which help cultivate and maximise each individual's potentials and excel our learning and collaboration to become a lot more efficient and more achievable toward the overall goals and missions of the company. Although a lot of companies are focusing mostly on making money and billings for their business and tend to forget the important of encouraging teamwork and cultivating an open, creative and innovative culture these days. I really look forward to see more of these innovative and creative startups that focus on quality of work and team's efforts more in the near future!

Thank you Hiroshi! Given this perspective, you would probably appreciate a recently released book by Frederic LaLoux called Reinventing Organizations. It outlines developmental levels of consciousness and maps it to organizational structures, process and practices. It's a roadmap for leaders looking to strengthen their culture and evolve their organizations. https://www.reinventingorganizations.com/
