How society killed curiosity (no cat involved)

At home
As a child, you used to ask WHY for everything around you. That is because you wanted to know all the secrets of the world you live in.
- Mommy, mommy, why is it raining?
- Because it is autumn.
- Why is it autumn?
- Because it comes after summer.
- Why does it come after summer?
- Because… Don’t ask too many questions. I have to finish my work.
After a few too many experiences like this one, you just realized it is not good to ask ‘why’ too often because mommy or daddy will get angry or annoyed... Then you practiced avoiding that question through your childhood and accepted that it’s the way it should be. Your parents said so, so it must be true.
At school
A hint of melancholy, your diary lying on your bed and the homework is not done yet. What does it remind you of? The time came for your first relationship and falling in love… You were probably confused and you didn’t know exactly what to do. You were too shy to ask or to discuss it with someone. Who could possibly understand you anyway?
- Why doesn’t she want me to kiss her?
- Why doesn’t he kiss me yet?
The questions remained unanswered and the years just passed by…
At work
You got your first job. Yes! The world is yours. You are so enthusiastic and want to learn everything the first day. You ask your boss:
- Why are we going to do it this way?
- Because that is the way we have done it so far.
- Why don’t we try….
- Listen, it’s fine, just do it the way I told you.
And there you go. An idea is crushed and the need to know why, to understand and to do it better is presented as something negative and useless. So you just learn to go with the flow.
In your family
A few years later, you are coming home from work. Just tired and with your brain turned off, you turn on the TV. Suddenly your kid starts asking you:
- Why do I have to eat this?
- Why is this vegetable green?
- Why can’t I eat some sweets first?
- Because it is as it is! Don’t ask too many questions.
And you have just continued the chain and passed it on to the next generation.
The end
After many years, you are lying in your bed. You want to ask yourself why you are sick and why you have to die. Then you just think again and realize that there is no sense in asking why. Why? Because that is just the way you learned it to be and the way the society works. Full stop.
It’s not the end of the story
No, this story is not finished. WHY?
Because you may wonder your whole life who is to blame for your situation, but that will not bring any different results. You are the one to break this chain and start thinking about the “Why”, start finding the answers and realize its importance. Answering the why questions will give you purpose and direction, it will enhance motivation, creativity, and communication. It will change your life forever.
No matter in which phase of life you are, NOW is the time to make a difference, take full responsibility and influence the course of your story.
Curiosity may have killed the cat, society may have killed curiosity, but it still has several more lives to live. Let’s make sure they are worth it!
