Travelling can change your life... If you let it

Wow! What a journey it has been living in the UK for the past two years. When they say 'travelling changes your life', it really does just that. I've been able to grow, both personally and in my career; I started a global business (which I never expected to do); I'm now more than ever focused on my singing and songwriting; and currently, I'm travelling throughout Europe and America for the next seven weeks on my way back to Australia.

My career started off in the journalism world, but I soon knew that I wanted to experience the other aspects of media – marketing and PR. I'd always wanted to travel, but little did I know moving to the UK would open up so many new doors... All I knew was that I had hope.

I started off working for free for three weeks at a major PR firm to gain experience, followed by a few contract roles after that. Even when a contract ended, I knew it was a stepping stone to move onto other things. I think finding your perfect 'dream job' in any industry or country isn't easy, but having hope and being persistent works every time!

Then in 2013, a close friend of mine asked me to attend her business launch. I had no idea what it was about, but I was excited. This inspired me to start my own business. I wasn't looking to do this until I returned to Australia, but when a great opportunity comes up, you don't have to know what you're doing at the start – you can say YES and learn the rest as you go, which is exactly what I did.

Fast forward a few years, I've now left the UK and am making my way around Europe and America, before coming home to Australia. To be exact, I'm sitting in Santorini right now, the sun is blazing and the views are beautiful. I'll be home in August looking for new opportunities in my career – especially around my passion, writing. Yet for now, I'm taking a little time to focus on my songwriting, business and reflect on what a wonderful journey the past few years truly have been!

My advice for moving to another country:

  • Take Richard Branson's advice: "If someone offers you an amazing opportunity and you're not sure you can do it, say yes – then learn how to do it later."
  • When you're feeling homesick, have your pity party, then do something that makes you truly happy to change the mood.
  • Know that you may not always find your 'dream' job straight away, but always have hope and know that anything worth having in life doesn't come easy.
  • Don't stress too much about money and have belief that everything always works out.

Sometimes a picture speaks louder than words. It did for me when I saw this image by Mari Andrew in March 2020.
