the Climb

-To my daughter, Natalia, who is rising
On the occasion of her graduation from high school, 6/23/14
There is no vista
of the imagination; no summit
conceived in dream that is not made
more redolent by the wakeful
ardors of the Climb.
Imagination is the plea to
weary limbs against the tug of
gravity’s constant tether.
Dream is the goad to
one last, unlikely
step past surrender; and then more
improbably still, the next, and yet
the next.
Imagine, Natalia. Dream.
And if ever
tempted to yield, let
the yearning in your
heart fill in for the breath missing
from your empty
lungs; close your
eyes, the better
to see.
And…Climb!

10 年My last comment was meant to go on. I think someone who has 5 kids, finds a way to work with his equally brilliant wife, and dedicates his life to improving the health and medical knowledge of humanity is a wonderful example of a decent human being. Also, the poem reminds me of Viktor Frankl's "Man's search For Meaning" : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Man%27s_Search_for_Meaning
