Result or the process, What should be the preferred satisfaction for an individual or professional?
Well in this result-oriented society where we breed, one can't detach himself from the former no matter how debatable is the controllability of that option.
But again truth be told, The sphere where one's actual control lies and since ancient times which is deemed worthy of being called holy grail of immense pleasure is “Process”, Pleasure of attainment of the objectives whilst going through the journey of obstacles and finding ways. That in truest sense is the real fulfillment for many, so to speak.
That is the reason why great auteur of Film-making, Mr. Stanley Kubrick used to delve so much into the process of Film-making, and so detach he used to become from the society, that after the completion of his film. The exhibition of his art and the forthcoming tags of hit & flop seem unimportant for his creatively-fulfilled mind. That is why he used to live isolated in his Childwickbury manor mansion of London, completely drowned in his productions. There he used to research, write, invent special effects, and all his pre-production and post-production work for his film, managing all aspects of his films.
Men, to be frank, spend more time with what they like doing. So if Kubrick used to spend decades researching and producing some classic movies, we can be rest assured, results i.e exhibition and momentary reception of his work in the cinema theatre could be a less worry for the guy who have romanced with his work for a long time. If I have to choose an Indian example to describe this notion, K Asif (Mughal-E-Azam) & Guru Dutt (Pyaasa) are some noteworthy film-makers to explore,
Now, taking this discussion to our corporate world, and we’ll soon see the gradual drifting from the process to results. That’s the scene quite visible if you peek into any conference room where executives are planning the way forward for the upcoming month/year. The focus would definitely be on numbers and results to be achieved. The process and execution is being taking the backseat.
And if it continues to do so, it will be a sheer waste of creative energies of resources in the bucket of corporate. They should be spending more time going deeper into the “HOW” part, rather than marking a hypothetical projected figures on the white boards to achieve. Though if the intent of putting a figure is solely to inspire the team to move through the PROCESS in the most effective manner, then it’s probably better. As then it will act as a catalyst of high enthusiasm rather than a mere stress-tool.
And as a Sales professional, what do you guys suggest, which is the most beneficial path to opt. Which out-of-the-two can be the most effective strategy to find the real satisfaction? The question becomes tricky here as the lucrative perks and incentives comes into the picture making results an inspiration for many. And still, even after the same, ‘Process’ is the true candy to chew for many Sales folks. And thus I leave it as an open-ended question for you all to ponder.
I don't see how you can achieve results without the right process. One is responsible for the other. Results don't happen by waving our magic wands. On the other hand, high level discussions will focus on the results needed. It's up to those directly responsible for achieving them to create the appropriate process. I've often been called in for sales skill training when it's really a sales process that's lacking. Skills + process = results
