New DIN 4140:2014
An excerpt from the latest edition of the German “Isolier-Technik”.
For those who are not familiar with the German language a brief summary. The new DIN 4140 states that when there is a danger for condensation on the inside of the protective jacketing a air cavity should be created between the jacketing and the insulation material by using a studded foil. In case of non-rigid insulation materials (e.g. mineral wool slabs) the studded foil should be installed full-surface. And in case of rigid insulation materials only strips are necessary. On the lowest point 10mm drainholes are made to allow condensed water to extract.

10 年The usage of studded foil is only one way to create air gaps between outside cladding and insulation layer. Studded foils are only mentioned as an example. There are many ways to create suchlike airgaps. The problem is, studded foils are from plastic and plastic materials will shrink or begin to creep at higher temperatures. Outside claddings which are effected by strong solar irradiation can become very hot so that studded foils also will become very hot and could shrink or collapse so that there will be no more lasting air gap. For those high temperature endangered applications thin profiled sheet metal stripes or rings are available to create really lasting air gaps.
