Girls On Top While Boys Suck, Says Psychologist

No matter which subject they study, girls beat boys in overall GPA, says a recent research report. It has long been believed that boys outperform girls in mathematics and science while girls are supposed to be better in languages and humanities.
A review of 308 studies comparing 1.1 millions boys and girls in 30 countries has consistently reached the same conclusion: no matter which subject you look at, girls beat boys in academic performance.
Psychologist Daniel Voyer says he didn't expect to find these results. In his work recently published in the American Psychological Association journal Psychological Bulletin, he also found that girls have been ahead of boys in school over the last 100 years.
But the earlier belief about boys being ahead of girls in math and science was not totally unfounded as standardized achievement tests showed boys outperforming girls in these subjects. Girls scored better on languages and reading on these tests.
Voyer argues that these earlier findings might tell us something about gender differences in attitudes towards standardized tests. But stereotypes about gender differences are hard to break. Let us hope this study helps shatter the belief about boys' superiority in math and science.
My own experience of teaching boys and girls in the universities in Pakistan has been consistent with these findings. It is not that girls are necessarily more intelligent than boys but that they are certainly more responsible and hardworking as compared to boys. I believe it is these factors that must be studied if one is to truly find the reason for the gender gap.

10 年The finding is line with my observations also.It may be due to their limited outdoor and social activities. Moreover, I found that majority of the girls were more focussed and did not take their studies as casual. The subject demands more research from different perspectives including cultural aspects.
