Is Google Glass Worth Buying Today?
Today, anyone in the U.S. can purchase Google Glass – anyone can be an explorer. Is it worth the money?
I think so. I’ve been an explorer for nearly a year and I’ve experienced the world in a new way. I don’t work for Google. I don’t get any compensation for saying this and I paid the same $1500 that everyone else has paid.
So what do I do with Google Glass?
- Weather/Traffic– I wake up every morning and check out the weather of the day through Glass. I also look at how much traffic is out there to get me to my first destination.
- Photograph/Videotape in First Person – I am able to show the world to everyone through my eyes by photographing and videotaping various new experiences. I’ve run with Glass. I’ve boxed with Glass. I’ve even gone to work with Glass. This has helped me show things in a different way. Lately, we’ve been using Glass footage on videotapes that we have taken at HJMT to promote our clients. We use a regular camcorder and edit in b-roll of Glass footage. It definitely enhances the video and makes it more interesting. It’s similar to what we did with Glasslandia, the first YouTube reality show.
- Get the News – I subscribe to various news services and as soon as something new comes in, I get it on Glass. This enables me to track trends and share information with my community on Facebook, Twitter, G+ and Path, all through Glass.
- Play Golf – I use Glass when I play golf. It tells me how far away I am from the green and tracks my shots. It’s very handy to have and if I make an amazing shot, I can always take a photograph or videotape it!
- Workout – Recently I installed Lynxfit and when I want to work out, I can go to the app on Glass and can do squats, pushups and more all while wearing Glass!
- Get Recipes – I never know what to make for dinner and when I wear Glass, I can go to my recipe app and be able to make almost anything using Glass. I love that it’s hands free. I always felt it was cumbersome to use an iPad. (If you ever saw me cook, I get everything all over the place and oftentimes, spilled stuff on my iPad.)
- Messages, Emails and Calendar Alerts – I love getting my text messages through Glass. I can respond via voice commands. I also like getting my emails and calendar alerts through Glass. What’s really nice is, Glass will tell me how long it will take to get to my next appointment.
- It Translates – When I went to Puerto Rico recently, I used Glass and was able to translate signs in Spanish into English. That was pretty useful!
- Google Hangout – This is one of my favorite features. I can talk with someone via Google Hangout (which is similar to Skype but they can see what I see instead of seeing me). This opens up possibilities for people with disabilities to see the world beyond their front door.
- Where to Eat, Where to Go? -- Glass includes Google Now and also it has an app called Field Trip, that tells you where to eat, attractions and more. This is quite useful when you are in a location that you are not familiar with!
- Created a Wearable On Air Show – With Glass, I have created a Wearable on Air show, where I feature CEO’s of wearable tech companies to talk about their products and give demos. I also review products and services using Glass on a Tech News Now show on YouTube.
I recently got the prescription lenses for Glass and am enjoying it even more today then when I first purchased it.
So if anyone asks me if it’s worth getting Google Glass today, I would say, yes. But, if you want to wait, I’m sure the price will go down for the consumer edition and there will be lots of apps available to make your day more pleasant!

10 年I'll consider them when they cost $99. And then probably just use them on occasion for a travel excursion, run or special event. Can't imagine wearing them working out. Like many have already stated - I use my phone.

10 年Please don't drive with them on.... It would be worse than texting.

10 年I would say the same thing that I always say: Technology will keep growing...even to the extent that we don't need human beings to interact with, which we already do today. I am impressed how far it has came , but the truth is that devices like Google Glass is overdoing the basic function of communication (and also makes you look like a robot). Not to mention, the health factor (on your eyesight) is also negatively effected!
