How To Speed Up: A Personal Improvement Plan

In today’s fast-moving business world, speed is a necessary skill. You may think you are already working as fast as you can, but imagine what you could achieve if you could work even faster? At Rakuten, Speed!! Speed!! Speed!! is one of our guiding principles.

Here are some tips we have amassed to help individuals improve their speed.

  1. Set Goals. If you go on a trip without a set destination, you will meander. If, on the other hand, you set a goal, you will move much more directly. Naturally, the direct route is faster. In business, if your goals are vague—or worse, if you have no real goals and just come into work every day with no long-term plan—you will move slowly. If you set goals for yourself, your speed will naturally increase.
  2. Don’t Think, Then Act; Think to Act. Reject the notion that thinking must come first, and then be followed by action. Embrace the idea that you can think and act, and then think and act some more. Why is this faster? By acting, you will actually improve your thinking. If you are already in action, the impetus to think well is far greater. You are already in motion, so you must “think on your feet.”
  3. Consider the Perspectives of Others. It may seem counterintuitive, but one way to increase speed is to see your job and the goals of your company not just from your own perspective, but from the perspectives of others around you. You might think this adds time to your workday, but I disagree. When you use only tunnel vision at work and see only your own tasks and your own responsibilities, you may be missing ways in which you can improve and work more quickly.

Make the idea into action gives you the possibility to evaluate its impact, and how well it was done, that is why thinking is a continious process that comes before, during and after acting.

When I read this... the following came to my mind: "Actions you take have an direct impact on your ideas and thinking. Therefore if you make an action too quickly without thinking if its right first - It might as well be a "wrong action" but it will shape your thinking and ideas so that you will see it as "correct action"."
