What is your Moonshot for health ?

We have huge challenges for healthcare, out-of-the-box thinking is needed to get us out of this crisis of ever increasing costs and declining human attention.

September 12th, 1962 President John F. Kennedy at Rise University addressed his ambition to go tot the moon : his Moonshot.

After asking the congress in May of the same year for the budget for this mission, he started to share and spread the idea and ambition

With that mission he ignited a whole movement of innovation around the matter, giving hope, pride and challenged thinking in possibilities in stead op problems. And other than that : they've accomplished the mission. Something never would have happened if he would not have coined the ambition and idea.

Google founders Sergey Brin and Larry page did a similar program in terms of ambition by setting up their Google-X program. A semi-secret program with the goal to improve technologies by a factor of 10, and to develop "science fiction-sounding solutions.

With bold thinking and executing on it, they try to push the needle with disruptive technology and innovations. Projects that came out of that program yet are the driverless car, Google Glass, the internet project Google Loon and more recently Google Contact lenses for diabetics (might read my post on what i coined "insideables").

What if we'd choose to run a similar project on health(care). A program where we'd take great ambitions to solve health(care) issues, with very specific ambitions. So not like "to create a better health for all", or to "make cancer a chronic disease" both a very much needed. But very focused, very specific idea's that can be explained on 1 single paper or 3 slides.

Think of Star Trek, where the creators imagined a world where people could communicate through a small device to be hold in your hand, or have a device that can diagnose people with one click : the medical tri-corder. Al lot, if not all, 'weird' ideas from this TV show are a reality nowadays.

Over the last months i've been thinking : how about creating a program for healthcare : The Health-X project ! Creating a program with a number of bold ideas that we would execute on with a bunch of creative and knowledgeable people. To create dynamics and movement on a lot of issues in healthcare that don't really seem to 'move'.

What if Apple and Google would step in to health(care) aggressively, which seems to be a developing story at present with Apple Healthbook and Contact lenses for diabetics.

Imagine if we would ignite such a "moonshot"program, imagine we would find funding for a program as such, imagine we would indeed start a project to see if we can push the needle a bit and work on actually realize one or more of those moonshots.

So Imagine is would reality right now : what would YOUR Moonshot idea or ambition for health be ? Are you ready to take the elevator at REshape to the Health-X lab ?

Share them with us below, who knows it might come through. Anyway we work on our moonshots at the REshape Center with you, and maybe soon will have some great news, but don't tell anyone, yet ;-)

Creating an online tool that helps building global teams around specific healthcare challenges (originating from *real* challenges, from *real* patients, from *real* health care practitioners). If constructed with the necessary processes, openness and timeframes, it will help innovation in health forwards tremendously.

Founder, CEO at Med Grid, A Rebuilt Patient-Controlled Healthcare System On The Internet

We're working on this. It is rooted in a patient controlled crowd-sourcing platform for every element of the healthcare consumer's use case. Everything from diagnosis, treatment plan, choosing providers based on metrics, choosing providers/facilities based on cost and quality, and dozens of others. This includes both conventional and alternative treatments. Alternative is critical because it focuses on root-causes, and information about it only gets to patients by bypassing the information gatekeeper role that doctors, the FDA, and standards setting organizations fulfill. For example, we have sent 'secret shoppers' to the 'best' healthcare facilities in the US, and have found diagnostic accuracy rates (of 'root causes' e.g. sleep apnea causing atrial fibrillation) as low as 10% for some disease/root-cause combinations. This problem will never be solved via a top-down centralized approach that comes from the healthcare system. It will only come from the type of platform i am describing, where there are collaboratively established treatment standards, free from pharmaceutical company influence, free from the financial pressures of a 'transaction volume maximization' culture, and free from the slow-moving information dissemination processes of the health care system. Based on our analyses that we have done, global healthcare systems can provide much better quality of care at 50 per cent (or less) of the cost they do it for today. There has never been a bigger opportunity for disruption of a vulnerable business model.

My soap box moment is always and still is- allow Hypnotherapy into the Health care system. Afterall, if you have a small cut, the body stops the bleeding and seals this over to mend within a few days. Our bodies do heal amazingly well on their own, but sometimes need direction. Even operations can be succesfully completed with the use of hypnosis and no anesthetics. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-358163/Pain-free-operations-hypnosis.html
