Extra thanks for VBA workers from your nerd-in-residence

(the Winston-Salem VARO before and after pictures, showing VBMS kicking in for real...)

The Dept of Veterans Affairs does a lot of different things for vets. Most of the workers are on the VA medical side, but there's also a group that processes benefits payments for vets. That's the Veterans Benefits Administration--VBA--and they work on over a million claims from vets each year. They work hard but get a lot of crap. So this is for them...

Okay, folks, I've seen you get the job done, with lots of extra hours, that's appreciated!

Next steps involve lots more use of VMBS to get stuff done, those photos illustrates that around 75% of the claims inventory has gotten online. It also means getting VSOs involved, which also means connecting outside software like VetPro connected to VBMS via Digits to Digits, D2D.

This is in my role as "nerd-in-residence" at the VA Center for Innovation. (That's my designated term, I know who I am, and have a sense of humor.) (For Washington, I'm funny; granted that's a low bar.) (The wife reminds me that I'm not as funny as I think I am.)

Thank you for sharing Craig Newmark. We are in the numbers every single day. There's still more work to be done, but it helps when someone like you shows the progress. It seems like no matter how much the VA accomplishes, there persists a narrative that we are all lazy and incompetent. Of course, we can and should do better...but it isn't for a lack of effort.

If they had a system (once most claims folders become online) where docs/PAs could do ACE exams online for some extra compensation, I would definitely do some that. It benefits all parties involved.

Interesting read. Wife was involved with the VBA for much of her career before becoming a mommy, and I have to say that there are many other issues to be solved (1 was definitely the paperwork side). Personally, I think it would help tremendously on cases if vets were actually taught how claims worked and not to add additional claims onto an already open case. That's what makes them take a long time since all open items have to close for the case to close and money to be granted. It's not always a technology culture shock, but the same as any other company where people fear change. Even when efficiency is the only mannerism that can help solve the workload issue.
