My Big Ambition For Small Business

As part of our economic plan, I want to give our small businesses every possible advantage to compete in the global race. It has been one of my key priorities in government and something that I am glad to say is paying off. Almost half a million new businesses were set up last year alone and I really do believe that Britain is once again becoming a nation of enterprise. But let's not be complacent; to do this, we need a cultural change that celebrates business as a creator of opportunity and jobs.

We know that for the most part, businesses want to get on with it themselves without Government interference, which is why we have been relentlessly cutting red tape. But sometimes - and especially when you are starting out - we need to offer support. So I am delighted that on Small Business Saturday, the Department for Business - our champion of enterprise - is setting out the government's offer to small businesses, with Small Business: GREAT Ambition. Small businesses are the lifeblood of our country – a necessity for building a resilient, sustainable economy and this offer is our commitment to make it easier for small businesses to grow; helping hard-working people who want to get on in life.

One of the key things that business needs in this day and age is a means of fast and reliable communications with their customers. So I am delighted that DCMS is today launching a scheme to help connect businesses all over the country to superfast broadband. Up to £3,000 of broadband vouchers for small business in 22 cities is not only a massive boost for growth in the UK, but also has the potential to bring China to Cardiff, Brazil to Bristol and the Emirates to Edinburgh in an increased export market. Ending energy auto-rollovers for business customers and making it easier for small firms to win public sector business are just two more examples of how we’re backing small business.

Some of you will be big business reading this, but it doesn't matter; you either work with small businesses or were once a small business yourself. So I encourage all of you to read Small Business: GREAT Ambition and see how we’re making it easier for small business to hire people, develop new ideas, expand into new markets and get on with doing business. Perhaps becoming the big business of tomorrow.

The first ever UK Small Business Saturday is a chance to get behind this cultural change; for everyone to support local traders that play such an important role in the UK economy. So I say today, let's all celebrate business in the biggest way we can and go out and shop small.

Rod R, where can your book be purchased ? I think it's great there recognizing the small business as the bottom line is that's what the economy is built on, I would also like David Cameron to to recognise and offer more help for young people to become entrpunairs, as a 22 year old my self I struggled for years to get to where I am today finding it difficult to get free advice and support and it's these people we need for to support to achieve a successful future for the uk economy.
