Our Businesses are Helping to Build a Stronger Economy

It is great there are so many more businesses in the UK – we now have a record 4.9 million. Although there's still a long way to go, it is clear that step by step, inch by inch, Britain is turning a corner.

While the numbers today themselves are important, we should never forget the people behind them: the thousands of entrepreneurs, innovators and small businesses owners helping our drive our country forward. And we should remember too the jobs that these businesses are creating. Private sector businesses employ an estimated 24.3 million people, with 1.4 million created since 2010.

Today I visited ASOS in Barnsley. The company is a real success story and now employs over 3,000 people in this area. This demonstrates that there are jobs, businesses and expansion coming to this area. We want to make sure that everyone can take part in a growing economy.

But there's still a long way to go - the struggle of the past few years will only be worth it if we finish the job we started. We want a recovery that all hardworking people can share in. That means a fired up economy full of good jobs. It means welfare that gets people back into work. And it means schools that help every child achieve their dreams.

So we've got to keep going. And that's why we're going to continue backing small businesses across the country. From April we are making it much easier for employers to take on new staff: around 450,000 small businesses will pay no National Insurance contributions at all.

We should be proud of the benefits that strong, vibrant employers can bring. These latest figures are another step in the right direction for our country, which is why I am determined to stick to our economic plan.

hi , nice to meet you ! could we be friends ? :)

I have read the comments with a lot of interest. I hope it will also be easy for Ugandan company to open shop in the UK, even as a small business. It seems easy for UK-based firms to start elsewhere easily, which is not in line with the Investment agreements that our partner states have signed. I do not understand the rationale of how being open will increase taxation. Do businesses want to pay the right tax? They have stolen for too long. Imagine a salary of between US$12 - US$24per month paid to our unskilled laborers in sugarcane factories or US$60 per month in other processing industries. Are these the kind of jobs we are wishing for or the kind of labor exploitation you desire or justify? No something has to change.
