Class of 2013: Plan and Prepare

I have always been a huge believer in the importance of education and although I went straight into work after leaving school one of my proudest achievements over the course of my career was graduating from Harvard Business School in 2003 as a mature student.

I have been extremely lucky over the last few years to be honored by a number of Universities across the country including University of East London, and I am very proud and delighted to accept these awards for my contribution to business. As well as being thrilled to be given such recognition it has also given me the opportunity to speak young graduates about their hopes and ambitions.

I have found when speaking to students and graduates they have such an enthusiasm for the next step in their careers. However, leaving education and going into the world of work can be a daunting experience. I have two pieces of advice to people who are heading towards graduation.

You make your own success

Success doesn't come easily. There are no shortcuts in life and to be successful you have to work hard. Look for an opportunity in everything that comes your way.

Plan and prepare

Make a plan, know what you want to achieve and understand how you will get there. Create a long term plan but also write down 3 things you would like to achieve by the end of every month.

Here is an excerpt from my acceptance speech at University of Bradford:

There is no greater sense of achievement than giving others the tools they need to succeed. I have been very fortunate in the opportunities that I have been given in my life, and having the chance to provide others with the steps they need to survive and succeed outweighs any financial returns I have made as a businessman.

For me, giving back to young people in this country is of paramount importance. One million young people have limited opportunities, and that’s why I agreed to Chair the Start-Up Loans Company on behalf of the Government.

This will give people the chance to drive their own future, be their own boss, boost employment and stimulate growth. It’s one of the most incredible projects I have ever led, and being able to raise the aspirations of thousands of young people is the most exhilarating experience yet. It’s tough out there – we all know that. But it’s not impossible. There’s a role for each of us to play, and you will make it – I know, because I did. Against all the odds, with no formal education – just armed with determination, confidence and belief in myself – I made it. To the graduates here today my advice is know what you want, and go after it. And if you don’t know what you want, don’t stop until you figure it out. And when you do, work hard, don’t give up and you will succeed.
