A higher level of productivity

There are lots of different names for entrepreneurs and various takes on what the word really means. Lots of you had your own views on what the definition of entrepreneur should be when I blogged on the topic last year.

One rather old but very relevant definition I came across recently is by the French economist Jean-Baptiste Say. In 1803 he said an entrepreneur “shifts economic resources out of an area of lower and into an area of higher productivity and greater yield”.

More than 200 years later the definition rings true. Entrepreneurs identify areas that are under-performing and are ripe for disruption. They go in, shake up the market and increase productivity.

I was interested to read in The Atlantic that falling levels of entrepreneurship could be seen as good news for the economy, and would strongly disagree with that idea. Entrepreneurs are the job creators of the future and need to be encouraged, supported and celebrated.

Daniel Enrique Diaz Ramirez said:

Entrepreneurship is living with the uncertain and making something possible no matter what. It's risky but is exciting."


Elizabeth Babafemi suggested:

An entrepreneur takes big leaps, dreams big, holds head up, never looks back, believes in possibilities, works hard, and ignores the naysayers..."

Himanshu Joshi simply said an entrepreneur is "having fun while innovating things..." William Vanbergen offered "someone who has the perseverance to keep going against the odds, over time, to realise their vision."

The last word goes to Muhammad Umair Moiz though:

I think entrepreneurship means the fulfilment of that need of society which society didn't know up till then."

Entrepreneurship is a soul you develop to change current circumstances and to yield better outcomes for self and others.

Pressure? Grow and mature such that you acclimatize yourself as soon as possible. Stress then must become a memory. One is performing excellently always not only in the employee role, but assimilating and practicing needed skills for one’s eventual entrepreneur role. All that excellence remains a job hazard contingent upon P/L weekly quants and ever higher targets across several dimensions. You prove to anyone thereby, your company cash value and client magnetizing power as a profit center, by the same token prove it to yourself and to any future employer or client. With metrics, comes hard documentation of same which serve as direct and unequivocal recommendations of your exceptional worth. “Never assume anything. If you guess you may guess wrongly. People hold your errors against you forever, but demand your successes without giving them endorsements or recommendations.” Diplomatically inquire, as many will not easily and friendly divulge information which to them is both valued and was hard come by. Beware of being given erroneous information by anyone. Test all information as to its credibility. Artfully cut off or throttle back relations with those who hinder you and reward those who help you. Prepare and function according to your job description while discretely learning more about the team and company in which you work. Network slowly wary of political circumstances and personalities. Be ready to help were appropriate and practical in a leadership manner, inspiring and nurturing, such that others gain more self-worth as you apparently “get them started” only, on a solution or procedure, not denying them dignity otherwise as an incompetent who needs other’s to do their job. Sentiment, emotion and instinct are no substitutes for reason and evidence. Due diligence and performance care need be exercised constantly such that all procedures and methods can be rationally explained and justified to profit always. This is a hard level of competency to attain, but that mastery such that you can answer at any moment “Why did you do that?” imparts an unmistakable and indelible seal of proof of extraordinary value to the company, its clients and to your entrepreneurial future possibilities. This fact, supported by documented recommendation, if only self-recommendation of work products, must be positively proven from the first moment of contact with a prospective employer and constantly maintained. Maximize all opportunities and acquire the necessary skill to do so else waste one's life in sub-employment.
