An End to Polio? We’re In

Last year, fellow entrepreneur and philanthropist Bill Gates sent a four-page letter asking me and Bloomberg Philanthropies to support the Gates Foundation’s efforts to eradicate polio once and for all. After getting up to speed on the issue, I sent him a two word response: “We’re in.”

Today Bloomberg Philanthropies announced a $100 million commitment to the Gates Foundation and its partner, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), which has a serious and workable plan to eliminate polio around the world. We have an historic opportunity to end this disease and relegate it to the medical history books. That’s why I made this commitment, and that’s why Bill and Melinda Gates are working so hard to raise the needed funds.

I also made this commitment because the Gates Foundation and GPEI are approaching the polio eradication fight using the principles— innovation coupled with data driven accountability – that Bill and I employed to create and grow our businesses.

In today’s Wall Street Journal, Bill and I co-wrote about our partnership on this and other public health initiatives. I hope you’ll read it – and join us in putting the final nail in polio’s coffin.
