Join the Dementia Friends
Free volunteer-led 'Dementia Friends' information sessions are being rolled out across England from today.
They aim to improve knowledge of dementia by helping people understand what living with the condition might be like, and the small things that they could do to make a difference to people living in their community.
This is a massively important issue for our country. There are 700,000 people with dementia already and we're heading towards a million. Of course we need to do more medical research and improve our health and social care, but all of us have a role in making sure we make more dementia friendly communities.
I took part in a Dementia Friends session today at Downing Street. It was fascinating and I learned a great deal.
I hope that up and down the country, people will get involved in the sessions and learn a little bit more about how we as a community can become more dementia-friendly.
We're aiming for a million people to become dementia friends between now and 2015.
Staff training
Alzheimer's Society is working with larger companies and organisations to set up training and awareness sessions across their staff groups. Other larger volunteering organisations will be equipped to run their own Dementia Friends programme for their volunteers.

11 年Dementia awareness is a cause close to my heart. I work closely with our local Alzheimers groups to try an raise awareness of the legal issues that those recently diagnosed and their families should be aware of. Many of my clients and their families have seen the devastating effects of dementia and struggled with the issues that it brings, from obtaining a diagnosis to getting the right care and support. Anything that champions this topic is a good thing.

11 年THis is a great idea, but why not address what has caused Dimentia and try to udo the damage. Has anyone looked at nutrition and the power of Oxygen, getting rid of acid through improper diet, inflamation and maintaining a proper PH within the blood, which carries nutrition to the brain? In a few years Dimention could be eliminated if only these fiels were addressed.

11 年This is a great step forward in supporting the needs and requirements of the elderly. However I do believe the medical profession should take off their cloak of legitimacy and practice preventative methodologies. With the correct nutritional and medical care and preventative information Dementia could be reduced considerably across the population.
