Sandy Hook Promise launches today, an initiative to end gun violence

Folks, here's the deal: one month after the tragic mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, a group of Newtown, Connecticut citizens have organized to honor the lives lost by unveiling a national grassroots initiative to end gun violence in America, a nonprofit called Sandy Hook Promise (SHP, formerly called "Newtown United"). This group's committed to preventing similar tragedies from ever taking place again.

The folks that'll be at the unveiling of Sandy Hook Promise today include members of SHP's Executive Committee, participating victims' families, survivors, first responders, and other community members to launch this important initiative.

This morning, Sandy Hook Promise will share its plans for working toward an end to gun violence. SHP is asking folks across the country to make a promise to encourage and support common sense solutions that make communities and our country safer from acts of violence like the tragedy on December 14, 2012.

There are people in the tech community mobilizing to support an end to gun violence in America. The tech community's combining its efforts directly with the Sandy Hook Promise organization, beyond the Causes Petition and the "Moment of Silence" efforts.

The families of Newtown-Sandy Hook also want us Post to Facebook and Tweet about the efforts using the hashtag #sandyhookpromise beginning today, Monday, January 14. We must get all of America to sign the Sandy Hook Promise on the website.

Some sample Tweets:

    • Join me and people in Newtown in making the #sandyhookpromise to support common sense solutions to reduce gun violence at www.sandyhookpromise.org
    • I'm joining people in Newtown in making the #sandyhookpromise to protect our children and reduce gun violence. Join us at www.sandyhookpromise.org
    • Today, people in Newtown are making the #sandyhookpromise to reduce gun violence. Sign the pledge with me at www.sandyhookpromise.org

We know that from the beginning of time...according to the Holy Bible and recorded History...there have been people killing people. And the killers (in their minds) feel that they have reason to take a life or lives. There is no doubt that 'evil' is always present and that only God can change man's heart. Also, we have laws that are suppose to be adhered to...if not there are consequences. We KNOW this...yet they're broken in many ways. So, there are some who do not want to listen to reason...just want to have their way. It's impossible to satisfy everybody. Let's be reminded that the 'government' is not just President Obama...it includes all voting citizens, We can work together to solve our problems or we can continually complain and become a part of the problem.

ITA w/ Randall B. here. I can get behind "common sense" solutions as long as there is no pre-emptive "except if it involves more legal gun" clause.

Count me in. It's not enough to just be sad watching the news and seeing those angelic faces. As a nation we have to make this a priority and do whatever we can to keep our children safe. When I was growing up I knew if I had a career in law enforcement it would be a dangerous job. Now you have to be fearful if your son/daughter wants to go into teaching? There is so much to worry about in this world. A parent shouldn't have to worry if they drop their child off to school that this could be their fate.

Just stop the American cult of violence in movies, tv, games, sports. Remember US pilots smiling happily after bombing Bagdhad and killing people?????

Shouldn't we be asking what causes the individuals who perform these unspeakable acts? It's not the guns but the people who get a hold of them. Go to the root cause of the problem don't just put a bandaid on the issue. Better ask the government what the true story was behind Sandy Hook!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
