Since it looks like reality TV is here to stay, a thought crossed my mind: When are they going to do an "Extreme Career Makeover" show? I realize I'm a Career Geek, and therefore particularly focused on this subject. But seriously, why isn't there a show like that yet?
Is It Too Risky?
My first thought is people wouldn't want to be on TV and have their professional lives on display. It's one thing to be the "Biggest Loser" but perhaps the fear of being seeing as the, "Biggest Career Loser" would make people shy away?
No Guaranteed Happy Ending?
My next thought is the producers are worried they couldn't guarantee (or, engineer!) a happy ending every time. Who wants to watch the show where the person doesn't get the job, right?
No Corporate Sponsors?
Perhaps it's the fact companies seem to be perpetually laying off, and therefore, no sponsors would be able to be respresented on the show for fear they'd be seen as hypocritical should they someday have to let some employees go?
Would You Participate?
I'm curious, would anyone here volunteer to be on a show like that? Would you watch a show like that? I can't be the only one that thinks it has the potential to be interesting?

8 年I would hands down go on a show like the one you are proposing. 1.The coaching. 2. Employment exposure. 3.Having an organization outside back me in terms of attempted success I see this show as the sharktank template getting a job, I would watch it. If you are looking for applicants, I'd love to apply.
Whats next?
8 年I have run at least a dozen variables of this concept through my head. From high school students to college grads to midlife crisis and beyond. There are so many interesting concepts that would be entertaining and very beneficial to both the recipient and those working to assist. And yep I think I'd give it a go!

8 年Interesting idea. I am not a fan of "reality shows" and only occasionally watch The Amazing Race ( will watch if I turn the TV on and it is playing). Watched only one episode of the Apprentice. But would be interested in seeing career makeovers or people moving in a new direction. I have tried to turn my unpaid volunteer experience into a new career direction . I have come to the conclusion that many years of successful leadership in volunteer experience does not count for much in the eyes of employers.

9 年Oh goodness get my creative mind exploding here. 1st off yes, I would. I am who I am strengths AND flaws. I'm also a ham and love to tell stories (arms waiving and all). I'd tweek it a bit though and do one of those deals where you watch the interview and coach an interviewee through a live interview (uh ... Maybe). Or possibly set it up where someone wants to have a career doing X, so you get a boss who is game and throw the little newbie in and see if they like (don't like) the career they THOUGHT they wanted. If they impress the boss, the boss hires them. It could go either way. Of course you'd be there to coach them before and interview them after. Lots of lessons may come out of it too. How about that? Call it Live Hire! The boss could even pick their own candidates. If I mull it over long enough, some of the other thoughts will come to the forefront, for now they're in the back of my mind buzzing around like bees! Snicker! Truly. Sounds like fun. I like those kind of shows.
