Less ice loss => More ice gain ?

Good question ...

There was less ice gain in the beginning of the year, right? But if we say the middle line is at “10”, we observe 5 squares in the summer period and approximately 7-8 squares in the winter, what does that mean? Why isn’t this symmetrical regarding summer and winter period? So in the end perhaps no gain and no loss?
