The Wisdom of Your Employees

"What do you think?" This is a simple, yet powerful query - but I wonder if management is consistently posing this question to their employees. If we would only ask this key question, we could surely benefit from the wealth of information that exists within the minds of our staff. Undoubtedly, they possess a broad knowledge base and a bevy of ideas, that quite frankly, cannot be matched.(I realize this each and every time I conduct interviews with a new client organization.)

Many organizations are already on board - listening to employees concerning customers and processes - and acting swiftly regarding what they hear. But, I'm making a power play for the rest of the group, just in case they haven't put a regular conversation with employees as "priority one" on their schedules. Often work life can become hurried and overwhelming. It's inevitable that the simplest of questions can shuffle into the background.

Employee engagement is quickly becoming the management "calling" of the decade - and if we can impact engagement, it is a win-win for everyone involved. So, I recommend engaging your staff in conversation, however you see your way to accomplish this, and possibly increasing engagement as well.

A few areas to explore:

  • Why that last hire didn't work out. I'm sure the individual may have matched every last credential necessary for the role, but something just wasn't right. What really happened - and how can you avoid a repeat scenario?
  • How that software is really doing. Purchasing applications for the workplace is a sizable investment - and the choice can have a huge impact, negatively or positively on your business. Don't be clouded by short-sighted judgement. If you suspect something isn't right, ask for employee reviews. (You'll be shocked at what you learn).
  • The latest "buzz". As mentioned by fellow LinkedIn Influencer Aaron Levie, if you are not on the front line, you can to miss the subtle evolution occurring in your industry. Have a conversation with your staff about the trends they are seeing.
  • What your customers are really thinking. Only those in the field have a 3-dimensional view of your customers. Unless you are riding along, or accompanying them from time to time, managers can develop a bit of myopia concerning customers. Look to your employees for information concerning issues and include them in solution development.
  • How to wisely save a dollar. Saving resources is always a priority - but saving them wisely is another story entirely. If you want savvy ideas on how to save "smart", look to your staff. Crowdsource some ideas - you'll be happy you did so.

How have you utilized employee wisdom to drive your business forward? Tell your story.

Not a rocket science. Have a attractive Suggestion Scheme for employees. It can be made focused by declaring areas of concern. Expeditious disposal of suggestion in time bound response mechanism. We have it , but slow response leads to demotivation. Agreed employees tacit knowledge needs to be tapped and getting it through a recognition and reward system can be a good idea.
