20 Years in Social Housing: A Journey of Change, Challenges, and Commitment

Reflecting on my two decades in social housing, it’s amazing to see how far the sector has come and how my role has grown alongside it. From hands-on operational roles, focusing on neighbourhood and tenancy services, to guiding strategic decisions as a Non-Executive Director, this journey has been defined by a deep passion for providing accessible, affordable homes—and a drive to adapt to the changing landscape of social housing.

Evolving Regulations and the Drive for Transparency
The regulatory landscape in social housing has evolved tremendously. When I first entered the field, much of our focus was operational, but with new standards—shifting from KLOE’s (Im sure you all remember them!) to Tenant Satisfaction Measures (TSMs)—the spotlight has shifted to transparency, tenant voice, and accountability. These changes aren’t just procedural; they’re fundamental to building trust and fostering a tenant-first approach. TSMs, in particular, provide a more transparent, data-driven view of performance, empowering tenants to have a more active role in shaping their housing experience.
Navigating these regulatory shifts has meant constantly adapting and ensuring compliance while keeping our mission at the core. Leading these transitions has been both challenging and rewarding, with initiatives focused on listening to and acting on tenant feedback. With each regulatory change, we’ve adapted and embraced the opportunity to better meet tenant needs and to raise the bar for service.
From Operational Management to Strategic Transformation
Starting my career in operational roles—managing neighbourhood services and developing tenancy sustainment programs—gave me a solid foundation in the day-to-day realities of social housing. Over time, I transitioned to strategic roles, where I could contribute to the sector’s direction. Today, as a Non-Executive Director, I am privileged to help guide organisations in building sustainable, forward-thinking models that balance tenant welfare with business needs.
The shift from operational work to strategic governance brought new responsibilities, like ensuring regulatory compliance, promoting strong governance, and fostering transparency at every level. Moving from frontline operations to board-level oversight has deepened my understanding of social housing’s potential and reinforced my commitment to contribute meaningfully at every level.

The Digital Transformation: Embracing Innovation to Better Serve Communities
One of the most exciting changes in social housing has been the digital transformation. In my recent roles Implementing digital solutions like self-service portals, data-driven insights, and streamlined customer engagement tools has empowered tenants while improving efficiency. I’ve been lucky to have been involved and led many digital projects, from launching digital platforms that enhance tenant access to services to implementing a “data-first” strategy that enables us to respond to needs more effectively.
Technology has given us the ability to engage more dynamically with tenants, providing easier access to services and creating more efficient processes. These digital transformations aren’t just about operational efficiency; they’re about making social housing more accessible and responsive to the needs of the people we serve.
Why Social Housing Matters: The Purpose That Drives Me
Amid all the regulatory and digital changes, my commitment to social housing remains rooted in its purpose. Social housing doesn’t just address the need for affordable homes; it provides stability, dignity, and opportunity for individuals and families. I’ve seen first hand how a safe, affordable home can change lives, and it’s this impact that drives me every day.
Looking Ahead: A Future of Innovation and Tenant-First Solutions
The future of social housing is bright, with opportunities to continue enhancing transparency, digital innovation, and tenant involvement. While regulations will keep evolving, we have the chance to set new standards, advocate for tenant-first approaches, and build more inclusive communities. I’m excited to continue this journey, bringing insights from years on the front lines and in strategic roles to help shape a resilient, responsive future for social housing.
