20 Ways to become a better teammate!
?
Anyone that’s been in the workforce 20+ years has learned that we don’t always get to work with our besties and with likeminded individuals but that’s okay.
?
We are grownups, professionals and it’s up to us to make it work.
?
- ?Don’t sweat the small stuff. Mistakes and details can be addressed behind the curtain or let go.
- Get those tough conversations out of the way, they will help both of you!
- Accept everyone is different and thus, has another view or outlook.
- Take a deep breath and respond with understanding at the core.
- Ask questions of others.
- Lend a hand and step in when you have bandwidth to assist.
- Learn more about others in roles and depts that are different.
- Address comms respectfully and say please and thank you.
- Call out your expectations or the clients. Don’t assume they know.
- Set boundaries & respect theirs. Nobody needs unnecessary interruptions. Schedule low priority tasks in a calendar.
- Pick up the phone for complex issues or frank conversations.
- Communicate on a regular basis. Share updates, what are we each doing. Be totally transparent and overly share.
- Reward and recognise others. I’ve always believed it wasn’t just up to the “leader†as I love peer feedback.
- Ask for help and ensure you are both a teacher and student in the team.
- Share contacts and be inclusive.
- Nudge, push and motivate those with potential. A little bit of challenging behaviour is good. It keeps us fresh. I’ve never agreed that your team mates should be 100% agreeable & placid. There’s an opportunity for you both to push each other to future growth!
- Connect on an individual level. I’ve found in larger teams its harder to have those personal insights with people but knowing who’s a cricket player, who has a garden, who has kids, etc is key.
- Share the team praise if it falls on you.?
- Care about their long term future.
- Offer to help. If they are sick or away or just struggling. It says a lot.
?
We often talk about our KPI metrics but not what makes us great team mates or what we are doing to become better.
?
Are you working on these team skills?
