There’s no doubt in the value of grammar but it definitely takes time and patience to master it. Our team has prepared a review of helpful resources based on our expertise and our students’ experience.

Pros: Here, you can find comprehensive visual explanations of the key grammar topics for A1-B2+ learners. All the exercises are provided with clear comments. It’s a great platform for drilling as each topic has at least 3 exercises.

Cons: Not all exercises have relevant contexts, and sadly only a few grammar topics are covered.


2) Perfect English Grammar ?

Perfect English Grammar

Pros: It is a well-structured resource with explanations and exercises.

Cons: There are no comments in the exercises. Besides, not all the resources are free of charge.


3) Learn English with British Council?

Grammar | LearnEnglish

Pros: It is a veritable website with understandable explanations from a world-famous organization.?

Cons: Only for A1-A2 and B1-B2, and exercises are too short.


4) Grammar monster

Grammar Monster

Pros: The creators definitely have a great sense of humor, funny memorable infographics.

Cons: The list of topics is limited and the interface is a bit old-fashioned.


5) Daily Grammar?

Daily Grammar

Pros: 440 Grammar Lessons and 88 Grammar Quizzes. Step-by-step lessons, practices, and quizzes that progress from the easiest to the most complicated.

Cons: Only Daily Grammar Lesson Archive is free.


6) Road to Grammar

Road to Grammar

Pros: Has 365 free grammar quizzes that you can take online or download them as PDFs and print them out. Each quiz also comes with a link to “notes,” which explain the rule.?

Cons: It’s good for brushing up grammar, but not for well-rounded learning.


7) Englisch Hilfen

English Grammar Online - Reference and Explanations - Learning English

Pros: It is easy to use, with all the topics available listed on the left side. There are 197 Grammar pages available at the moment, with short and simple explanations.?

Cons: The number of exercises on each of the topics varies. The majority of the rules provided are not comprehensive as they are made to just give a general understanding of the grammar point.

Pros: It is a free online extension to the Oxford Practice Grammar books from Oxford University Press. It is a series of three grammar textbooks (Basic, Intermediate, Advanced). The website gives access to more than 50 exercises from the books for further self-study as well as to pdf test booklets with answers.?

Cons: It is an addition to the book, so the exercises are very abrupt.


9) Woodward English Grammar

Woodward English Grammar

Pros: This website contains a vast collection of grammar rules with well-structured explanations, alongside charts videos, and grammar games.

Cons: The interface is not intuitive, so it might be difficult to navigate through the website. Not handy to use on the phone.

10)? BBC Podcast "6 minute grammar"?

BBC Radio - 6 Minute Grammar - Downloads

Pros: It is a series of short podcasts that explain various grammar concepts in a simple way. The accents are clear, adequate pace for intermediate to upper-intermediate learners. It is? great for noticing grammar in a natural conversation (at the beginning of each episode).??

Cons: Non-visual learners might need to listen to a podcast while making notes. They give the nitty gritty of a rule, but no tricky moments are usually mentioned.


11) Khan Academy

Pros: Perfect for learning the ins and outs of English grammar, starting from what each part of speech is. As an example, the content there is good for those who have no idea what an adverb is and why we "complete an exercise perfectly" but not "perfect".

Cons: The bigger part of the content was created 6-7 years ago, no new videos have been added for 5 years.


12) EngVid?

Pros: You can choose a teacher to your liking, old-fashioned explanations with a white-board.

Cons: There are too many videos, not all of them equally good. Inexperienced learners can easily get lost. Also, the interface of the website is not very user-friendly.


13) TubeQuizard

TubeQuizard

Pros: This platform uses TV shows and YouTube videos, which can help notice grammar patterns when listening. You can use any subtitled YouTube video. Another great thing about it is that you can search for specific grammar patterns in all the videos from the platform.

Cons: Most of the videos will be difficult for A1-A2 levels; the list of structures for practice is limited. Another issue is with spelling as the platform requests only specific wording (e.g. contractions or no contractions).


14) Grammar lessons from Oxford Online English

English Sentence Structure - English Grammar Lesson

Pros: Grammar is first presented in conversations. Explanations of grammar points from native speakers are quite detailed and engaging.

Cons: Most of the videos are 14+ minutes long. Besides, the channel doesn't cover C-level topics and on the other hand the explanations might still be a bit difficult for A1-A2 levels.

Pros: Learning and practicing grammar on the go, i.e. while writing something. Greatly helps to improve accuracy in writing. There are also useful articles in their blog (Grammarly Blog )

Cons: Focuses only on writing. You can get lazy and over rely on the tool.

Cons: only for B1+ learners.

Pros: It has an index, so it's easy to find a relevant topic. The explanations with examples are clear. It covers more grammar topics than regular grammar textbooks and websites. It is suitable for advanced learners.

Cons: As it's a reference book, it might not be convenient for those who prefer to work with more interactive formats like apps or websites.

Time-Tested

20) The book series "English Grammar in Use" by Raymond Murphy?

Pros: It’s a great source for those who prefer studying with a book, making notes on a paper, and being able to flip through pages to find necessary info. The series is divided into levels, with each consequent book being more detailed. The latest editions are also a great way of looking at "real" language.

Cons: There are very few exercises to practice grammar structures in speaking and writing.


21) The book series “My Grammar Lab” from PEARSON

Pros: It is a comprehensive series consisting of 3 books for A1-A2, B1-B2, and C1-C2 levels. Each unit has a detailed explanation of the rules and a number of exercises with increased step-by-step complexity. Each module starts with a diagnostic test which can save the learners’ time.

Cons: Not enough exercises for activating grammar. Apart from that, some topics are too specific and rarely used in real-world English.
