20 Essential Books on Creative Process – Andi Jack Milne 2016
All of these books are more than worthy of individual reviews and examinations but I only want to bring you to them as possible ideas for further investigation, study and research. If you find some help and work for you, that’s good; if you find some don’t help or work for you then leave them be and maybe revisit them later on in your journeying.
With much gratitude, respect and admiration for all of the creators featured in this list; the inspiring, influential and passionate people who lead and guide us on in the universal lineages, histories and heritages of the creative and expressive life.
Thank you, ajm.

Big Magic - Elizabeth Gilbert
How to Have Creative Ideas - Edward de Bono
Thoughts are Things - Prentice Mulford
Tape Delay - Charles Neal
How to Be an Imperfectionistt; The New Way to Self-Acceptance, Fearless Living, and Freedom from Perfectionism - Stephen Guise
Most of these books cover so much more than creative process within art; they are manuals of how to live creatively and healthily with a holistic approach to whole mind, body. heart, spirit and chakras development. They offer guidance in how to be connected with the true and natural self, the real and true artist inside of us from our ancient selves.
Stockhausen on Music - Karlheinz Stockhausen and Robin Maconie
Too Soon Old, Too Late Smart; Thirty True Things You Need to Know Now - Gordon Livingston
The Writer’s Chapbook - George Plimpton
Audio Culture; Readings in Modern Music - Christoph Cox and Daniel Warner
The Self-Forgiveness Handbook; Practical steps to empower your life - Thom Rutledge
Part of my own creative process is the joy of discovery from seeking and finding new ideas, perspectives and resources as I go. We can all get more joy and energy from the acts of exploration, discovery, experimenting and invention we endeavour in as we continue to make our art (just like we did as children before we all ‘grew up’ and got ‘serious’ about everything).
Towards a Cosmic Music - Karlheinz Stockhausen
Becoming a Writer - Dorothea Brande
The Lie that tells the Truth; A Guide to Writing Fiction - John Dufresne
Silence: Lectures and Writings - John Cage
A Whack on the Side of the Head; How You Can Be More Creative - Roger von Oech and George Willett
Some of these books I have read once or twice and made quick notes on the tips and hints I found to be helpful; most of these books I have read many times and will continue to read, reference, absorb and assimilate all of the insights, wisdom and learning they offer for the rest of my life.
Effortless Mastery; liberating the master musician within - Kenny Werner
The Artist's Way; A Spiritual Path to Higher Creativity - Julia Cameron
Making Ideas Happen; Overcoming the Obstacles between Vision and Reality - Scott Belsky
Improvisation; Its Nature and Practice in Music - Derek Bailey
Women Who Run With The Wolves; Contacting the Power of the Wild Woman - Clarissa Pinkola Estes
Please leave insights, comments and other titles you have found in your own process and journey in the comments section, helping each other to bring light to more creative wisdom and endeavours for the good of all who wish to dream and make their art and lives with love and healing.
Blessings to all who seek to find in love and grace, ajm.
