20 Days to Learn a New Skill!

20 Days to Learn a New Skill!

Hello, ladies and gents!

Thanks to Covid-19, we are stuck in our homes for the next 20 or so days. And that means there is time for reflection, thinking and may be, some doing! And this is what this letter is about - help you get started.

To help you get started, here is a TED talk I saw yesterday. The speaker, Josh, postulates that you can be above average in any skill in just about 20 hours of deliberate, regular practice. Keywords - deliberate, regular.

This lockdown gives you an opportunity to do EXACTLY that!

Inspired by him, I have picked up the guitar yesterday. Today, it's my second day, yet to get around to playing it. But will do it sometime. Let's see where I reach by the 15th of April. My ambition is to be able to play Dooba Dooba and O Sanam well in a room full of people!

So, coming to you.

Now that we now have all the time in the world, how about you learn a new skill that you always wanted? Sketching? Cooking? Music?

Here's what you need to do...

  1. Watch the TED talk. Identify the 4 tenets that Josh gives you. The second one may be a challenge.
  2. Pick a skill that you think you want to learn. Please do ensure that you have all the tools available to be able to learn it. If you want to learn skiing, you cant. But if you want to learn how to write, you can! The Internet is rife with tutorials.
  3. Commit to it by making a bet with a person that you don't want to disappoint. Say, your spouse. Or that fling (your colleague etc :D)
  4. Practice every day for an hour. The first few days would be tough but would get easier after that.
  5. Show off the new skill in 21 days :)

That's it!

Simple no?

Oh, and to make it simpler, as a one time offer. If you tell me what skill you want to learn, I will hunt for the sources that you can use to learn easily and share those with you!

Good luck! Happy learning :)
