21 Days of #30DaysLinkedIn: My Top 10 Tenets of Life Design (+You're Invited!)

Whew! It's Day 21 of #30DaysLinkedIn and it's been three whole weeks of showing up, practically against all the odds, often in the wee hours of the morning (like now), and sometimes unable to fully articulate my thoughts because fatigue, overwhelm, new-mommy brain, and good-ole imposter syndrome.

But we're here and I am so proud of that.

Being able to make and break habits is a skill that didn't always come naturally to me, but it's something that I have been taking active steps towards mastering for the better part of the last five years. As a neurodivergent adult who, like many, was met with a barrage of neurotypical tools (threats, really) that felt impossible to access, it's a huge deal me to be able to connect to the "why" behind some of the goals and dreams I have—and use that bigger picture to get myself moving on them. While brain chemistry makes this an imperfect process, I am still in awe of what a little extra brainpower, a great support system, and a LOT of forgiveness can do for the will to still to this—or any—challenge. I may be three days behind on my writing prompts, but I've been here every. single. day. Just because I said I would. And that's AWESOME.

That said, let's recap through those Top 10 Tenets of #LifeDesign and how remembering these little tips can give you that added push to shed the shame and work through your fear of failure by embracing the beautiful mess that is trial and error of every challenge you choose to pursue in life! Click the prompt read the full post.

  1. When in doubt, always do the next right thing. This means that the next time you're feeling lost, stuck or confused, take a moment to sit still and ask yourself: what would make me feel better or more clear right in this moment? Start with one foot in front of the other and let the rest of you follow.
  2. The sooner you behold, the sooner you become. Basic? A little bit, yes. Corny? Absolutely. But true? Heck yeah. The more you see yourself and show up as the person you want to be, the better chance you have of becoming them.
  3. Mind over matter—but it depends on the day. And that's okay. Willpower is fleeting and activation energy isn't an exact science. Sometimes, you just need a moment. You can't push through if you haven't rested, too! (And yes—please quote me on that!)
  4. Stay unafraid to re-define what it means to be you, no matter how often that changes. Seasons and life cycles come and go—and that's also okay. Allow yourself to shift, adapt and evolve as your interests, your priorities, and your surroundings change.
  5. Find your good angle (inside and out), and recreate it often. This is for the homies that thing looking and feeling your best (even on camera) doesn't matter. Spoiler alert: yes. It does. A lot.
  6. When making and/or breaking habits, forgiveness and flexibility are key. The most sustainable activation energy around habit forming is sourced by love, support and compassion—and that includes coming from yourself. Ask me how I know. :)
  7. Embrace evidence of error. Mistakes in all of their forms not only help us to grow, but they remind us in the most simple way where (and what) we've overcome to get where we are. Never forget that.
  8. Stay close to the people (and places) that feel like sunshine. Magnets exist in the form of people, places, things, ideas or concepts. When you notice that energy, sit still and absorb. We thrive emotionally, spiritually, physically and mentally where we feel most safe.
  9. Remember that the "big things" are often little, and many of the "little things" are actually pretty big. This goes far beyond the phrase "don't sweat the small stuff." It means in your haste to categorize and qualify everything in life, look also to acknowledge what it took for you to get to where you are—and how freaking good-looking you stayed while doing it. Which brings me to the last tenet:
  10. Hold space regularly for your accomplishments and be proud of everything—even the seemingly small things—that you do. I don't care how mundane, insignificant or "not that big of a deal" you think you are. It's all a lie. No one can do what you do—even on the days when you feel like the bare minimum was all you had the strength for. You are amazing, so celebrate yourself like you know it's the truth!

I've had so much fun redacting these top tenets, even when it was hard. At the end of the day, Life Design is about just that: knowing that even when the days are long and showing up feels like the last thing you want to do, connecting to that feeling of checking a commitment (not an obligation) that's going to grow you off of your to-do list just might be all you need to get going. With each new project in life, we have the opportunity to define another way in which we feel nourished, happy and complete. Next time you're feeling stuck, pull up this article and find the tenet that most resonates with where you are, and remember:

Trial is necessary and error is nothing but an opportunity to grow. You got this, and I'm here to guide you along the way!
