The 20% Challenge for 2025

The 20% Challenge for 2025

As we step into 2025, uncertainty is the only certainty.

The full potential of AI remains on the horizon, while humans are living longer and healthier lives. I believe it is critical to redefine career trajectories and the very nature of work itself—and to embrace these shifts with bold, forward-thinking strategies.

So, here is my challenge to businesses around the world—small, medium-sized, or even large international blue-chips:

CONVERT (up to) 20% of your FULL-TIME SENIOR ROLES into FLEXIBLE WORK ROLES.

Why this could be a good idea for your business?

1) Unlock Talent:?Senior professionals seeking independent opportunities bring unmatched expertise. By opening up flexible roles, companies tap into a growing pool of dynamic, skilled professionals eager to deliver results.

2) Save Money:?Flexible roles eliminate the overhead of permanent employment while giving businesses access to top-tier talent exactly when it’s needed most.

3)?Raise the Bar:?New perspectives, diverse experiences, and the drive of independent experts can reinvigorate your teams. Fresh thinking disrupts complacency and ignites innovation.

4) More Senior Job Opportunities:?By converting some senior roles into flexible ones, companies open up more doors for experienced talent to stay engaged in meaningful work well into later stages of their careers.

This approach not only helps your business stay leaner and more competitive but also creates a fairer, more inclusive workforce that leverages talent across all stages of life.

I think this way of looking at employment is fantastic, not least because more and more older people are younger.? I think it will be some time before society internalizes this idea, especially in Portugal, because after the age of 60 people become almost invisible. The reality is that there is a lot of talent in the elderly. There's a lot of desire to carry out projects that weren't possible to achieve at a younger age, often because when we're younger we accumulate other roles, especially family roles. Creating teams that are as diverse as possible in terms of age seems to me to be a brilliant idea, not least because with AI one of the things that will be most needed is creativity and this characteristic, unique to the human being, is present at all ages and if we don't take advantage of it, a lot of good things will be lost.?
