Do overs; Would life be ideal if we could occasionally have them?
Our current lives are nothing more than a compilation of results based on the choices we?made or perhaps never addressed.
Many of us constantly find ourselves torn in conflict between the ego and the conscious self.? We struggle with those insidious needs who call for immediate gratification as a dance partner, and of course its counterpart, the one who longs for delayed gratification and sustainable rewards.? The struggle is constant, the battles are daily, and the outcomes vary.
These battles come in many forms and affect all areas of our lives.
From the foods we chose to eat, to the friendships and company we keep, to the careers we pursue.? Every choice regardless of the field is intricately connected in some way or another to the rest, and their outcome ultimately paints a clear map of who you are.

In our youth, caution is thrown to the wind, but with the passing of the years, if you have studied your mistakes and gained some respect for the mechanics of the world and what it demands of you, impulses tend to become more controlled.? The toll of experience weighs a little heavier than before, and the fear of repercussions and missteps will make you second guess your initial instincts and force you to cross every T and dot every I.
This “middle age caution” often stems from failures; It develops into fear, and fear limits growth. Lack of growth prevents adventure, and lack of adventure halts discovery. Without discovery life becomes redundant, and a redundant life is a dangerous one, for boredom will creep up and your brain will look for immediate fixes to calm the need of excitement and change. This is how mistakes happen!
Preventing this vicious cycle from occurring is solely depending on the type of information you seek and allow yourself to receive.?
As the old Cherokee tale explains, there are 2 wolves inside of us, one fighting the other for control of the “Self”. On one hand there is the one with greed, lust, and vengeance at its core, and on the other, there is the one with love, kindness, and compassion at its heart.
Which wolf wins that inner fight is solely depending on us. The outcome truly lies in what we allow to enter our space. If you are struggling with a necessary change, one you know you must make to improve any condition of your life, it is imperative you pause and examine all aspects of your journey. Nothing is more frustrating than taking 2 steps forward only to take 3 steps back.?
This often happens when things in our lives are not aligned, and if you want to change any particular behavior for the betterment of you, the foundation and the details of such change must be in sync with your goal, and intentionality must be at the root of the behavior.
You can't get in physical shape and have junk food in your home. The same applies to mental health, you won’t become a happy person if you are constantly allowing yourself to be surrounded by naysayers and miserable people who often look at the negatives of life.
The music, the shows, the podcasts, the conversations you choose to listen to, all deposit seeds of positivity or negativity in your inner core… Your thoughts and actions will be a derivative of this information, so you must be alert and aware of that which is in your orbit.
Humanity has always been complicated, and in a time where immediate gratification has become the norm, maintaining a certain level of awareness at all times is extremely necessary to feed the Wolf you wish to be.
As far as do-overs… Would life be as fun that way? Imho, failures and mistakes expose our weaknesses and pave the way for improvement. That’s the journey… Learning to fall graciously forward and to rise up quickly until we get it right, or at the very least try. I assure you that trying daily to be better than yesterday it’s ultimately all that counts, so be diligent and vigilant of where you go and who you go with, and the rest will usually find a way to work itself out.
FORT’s King Solomon Award Scholarship (KSA) 2024
$50,000 to 21 Students!
As the 2023-2024 King Solomon Award (KSA) scholarship cycle draws to a close, we are thrilled to celebrate the outstanding achievements of our student applicants. This year, we proudly awarded a total of $50,000 to 21 deserving winners, marking another successful chapter in our commitment to supporting education and empowering young minds.
In addition to our overall winners, we are delighted to recognize two exceptional individuals as our grand prize recipients. One distinguished student from our Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) applicants received a grand prize of $10,000, while another standout from our High School applicants was awarded $5,000. These generous grants will serve as catalysts for their academic pursuits, providing crucial support as they embark on their higher education journeys.
The KSA scholarship fund, which fuels these transformative opportunities, is a testament to our dedication to making a meaningful difference in the lives of students. Originating from a portion of proceeds generated by the sale of trash liners, our commitment to social responsibility and community impact has remained steadfast. Furthermore, in a proactive effort to amplify our impact, we have pledged to allocate $0.25 for every Welcome Kit sold, effective July 1st, 2023. This strategic initiative reflects our ambition to surpass our target of $1 million in scholarship funds by 2032.
With this year's scholarship disbursements, FORT International has reached a significant milestone, surpassing $175,000 towards our overarching goal. As KSA continues to extend its reach and deepen its impact, we remain dedicated to fostering partnerships that align with our values. In line with this commitment, we are proud to announce our support for the DC Chapter of C-CAP (Career through Culinary Arts Program) through the awarding of a $1,000 KSA scholarship.
In closing, the 2023-2024 KSA scholarship program stands as a testament to our unwavering dedication to education, social responsibility, and community engagement. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to all the winners and express our gratitude to our supporters and partners who make these initiatives possible. Maternal Health Week?
Black Maternal Health Week, observed annually from April 11th to 17th, serves as a crucial moment to spotlight the urgent issue of maternal health disparities, particularly impacting Black mothers in the United States. During this period, we elevate awareness, advocate for equitable healthcare policies, and confront systemic injustices that contribute to disproportionate health outcomes among Black women.
Central to the discussion during Black Maternal Health Week is the stark contrast in maternal mortality rates between Black women and their white counterparts. Shockingly, Black women are three to four times more likely to succumb to pregnancy-related complications than their white peers. These disparities persist across socioeconomic lines, education levels, and access to healthcare, underscoring the deeply rooted biases within our healthcare system.
These disparities are intricate, arising from a complex interplay of factors such as structural racism, implicit bias, limited access to quality healthcare, and socioeconomic inequities. Black mothers often encounter obstacles in accessing timely and culturally sensitive prenatal care, leading to increased risks of pregnancy complications, including preeclampsia, and adverse birth outcomes. Furthermore, the pervasive impact of systemic racism exposes Black mothers to chronic stressors, exacerbating the risks of preterm birth and low birth weight babies.
Throughout Black Maternal Health Week, there is a resounding call to address these systemic injustices and implement comprehensive solutions to enhance maternal health outcomes for Black women. Advocates and organizations utilize this platform to amplify the voices of Black mothers, center their experiences, and advocate for policies that prioritize maternal health equity. This includes initiatives to expand access to affordable healthcare, invest in community-based maternal health programs, and challenge discriminatory practices within healthcare institutions.
In addition to policy advocacy, Black Maternal Health Week fosters community engagement and grassroots activism to tackle the underlying causes of maternal health disparities. Through educational campaigns, awareness-raising efforts, and mobilization, stakeholders collaborate to challenge societal norms, confront implicit biases, and promote holistic approaches to maternal care that prioritize the health and well-being of Black mothers and their babies. FORT & The Water Project
After receiving the inspiring news and update regarding the Laminaya Community project, we recognize the impact of the initiative on the community as a whole.? The Water Project's Laminaya Community project in Sierra Leone has changed the lives of the community forever. Kadiatu submitted a testimony following the completion of the project. She claims, "The project has helped me to fetch water with less burden. Since the well is close to our house, I am now able to fetch water easily [with] no need to go to the swamp. As a result, I have enough time to do work at home, such as cooking and laundry." Kadiatu's testimony vividly illustrates how something as fundamental as access to clean water can transform lives, freeing individuals from the burden of long, arduous journeys to collect water and granting them precious time to focus on other essential tasks.
Continuing on this trajectory of positive change, The Water Project remains steadfast in its commitment to advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation. By ensuring communities have reliable access to clean water sources, The Water Project not only addresses immediate needs but also contributes to broader objectives such as improved health, gender equality, and economic development.
The Laminaya project serves as a beacon of progress, demonstrating the tangible benefits that arise when communities gain access to clean water. Beyond Kadiatu's testimonial, the ripple effects of this initiative extend far and wide, touching the lives of countless individuals within the community. With clean water readily available, families can prioritize hygiene practices, reduce the risk of waterborne diseases, and allocate their time and resources towards productive endeavors.
As we celebrate the success of past projects like Laminaya, it's crucial to recognize that our work is far from over.
