#2 - Using Focus to Advance Your Career

Hey there!

Welcome to my second newsletter on achieving a Positive Mindset and Growth.

---

I'm going to start this newsletter by telling you a story. This story is about me, but it will teach out a lesson about your mindset and help you see how you can succeed.

I graduated with an MBA in 2015. I had no corporate experience. In fact, no one in my family had worked in the corporate world before, but I needed a job. I applied for jobs every single day for 6 months, to probably every single entry level position I could think of. It was wasn't working. So, I took it a step further and started applying to internships.

You see, the way internships usually work is that you have to be in the process of getting a degree, so applying to internships after graduation was something I'd never heard of. Luckily, I started hearing back from companies as a potential candidate for internship. Then I finally landed one. $12/hour internship in the services/consulting industry.

Yes - went through undergrad, got an MBA, and landed a $12/hour job. Crazy, right? Well, it was better than nothing, I went for it - but before I accepted the internship, I made sure that there was a chance that I could get a full time-job after the internship period.

Why? Because I wanted to join a company that provided an internship, but also provided a chance of getting a full-time job. What's the point of me interning at a place that'll leave me hanging in 6 months? I'll be back at the same place.

That's when I created my mindset to make it to get a full-time job. Once I made it to that level, I know I couldn't continue working in the service/consulting industry, so before I even got a full-time job, I knew I was going to move on to an import/exporter so I can start building my own business on the side.

With these two goals in my mind, I worked HARD - to show that I can do things faster than others around me, and better than around me. So, I got a full time job- and 2 promotions - all within 2 years.

In order to make sure I succeeded, I had to build a plan and in order to achieve that plan, I had to build my MINDSET. What did that mean?

  • While the other intern was coming in still drunk on Mondays, I had to be ready to work.
  • Talk to my supervisors to understand what they needed, and then teach the other inter exactly what he needed to do.
  • Take on the harder work/projects to learn things others avoided.
  • Ask questions to come up with new ways to do the work faster than others.
  • Take on more accounts and responsibilities than even my seniors had.

?

It was tiring - but I knew what I wanted and I knew that the only way to get there was if I put in the work. I had to harden my mind.

What's the lesson you've learned in my story? If you want to accomplish something, then you need to understand what work needs to go into it, then put in the effort to make sure it happens. If you apply this to ANYTHING you desire, you will see the magic unfold, I promise.

?

What most people lack aren't resources, it's not their capability, it's the ability to keep their focus on the end goals while they face the everyday life.

?

But this is step #2. If you want to learn about step #1 - Check out my first newsletter that talks about Mindfulness. Understanding yourself is the first key to accomplishing anything!

If you're lacking focus, one of the things you can do is find a place which gives you’re the environment to think. Sometimes that's as easy as going to a separate room or going to gym for a little bit every day so you can give yourself time to re-align with yourself!

Thank you for reading this newsletter! More to come next week!

?

As part of my weekly newsletter, I am asking the Subscribers to share any positive stories of mental growth they had throughout their lives. Even though all stories will be great, I will be choosing only 1 story to share each week (while keeping it anonymous). You can direct message me on LinkedIn or E-mail your story to me at [email protected] .

?

I look forward to what you share!!
