About two years ago I went to Dave Ramsey's EntreLeadership event and felt like it was very well put on and gained a lot of value from it. This February I received an email from Dave's team inviting me to their SMART conference that they were putting on here in KC. I immediately signed up. And invited one of my best buds to come along. That's the power of positioning versus prospecting. I didn't even look at what the event was, who the speakers were or even read enough to see that it was 10 hours long! It worked out perfectly.
I am a firm believer that God puts people/things/events in our lives exactly when we need them - even if you don't realize it at the time. It's been said:
If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans.
Little did I know, I signed myself up for a LIFE event - not a business event per say. So I was in for a full day of marriage, parenting and personal finance! Alright, I am starting to see the signs here...If you didn't already know, my beautiful wife and I are expecting our first baby, a girl, next February. I couldn't be more EXCITED!
Let's jump into the two unexpected takeaways from this event that I wanted to share with you:
- Dr. Les Parrot - Men want to fix problems, and women want to explore problems all the way to "Problemville." In all seriousness, men and womens fights usually start for one of two reasons: perceived threat (being too demanding, controlling, critical or judgmental) or perceived neglect (being too uncaring, neglecting, or selfish.) **Pro tip: use the XYZ formula: "In situations like X, when you do Y, I feel Z." This allows us to start a conversation, not a confrontation!
- Dr. Meg Meeker - Check out the link if you have a chance, Anthony was also at the conference. My #1 takeaway from this parenting talk titled "Hero Dad" was that the best way to increase a girls self esteem is to havbe her father give her physical affection. Check this article linked here to see all the research and stats behind it. It's time to step up as so called men, and start acting like them. Rather than asking how much screen time your children should have, ask yourself: How much time am I spending with my children? Let the screen time be an afterthought. I already went and bought her book, Strong Fathers, Strong Daughters.
There they are, the two unexpected takeaways from a surprisingly refreshing and uplifting Dave Ramsey Event.
